  • When to declare previous name changed by deed poll

    Hi,

A number of years ago I changed my name by deed poll.

Fast forward to present day, I have never been married and I'm not sure when I have to declare previous name.

if for example when i register my child to obtain a birth certificate, theres an entry for maiden name - Ive never been married so as I understand it, it doesnt apply, or would I need to declare my previous name there ?

Also is there a rule that after x years of using the new name exclusively one can stop declaring the previous one ?

I have nothing to hide, never had as much as a parking ticket, its just that the previous name belongs to someone who was highly abusive towards me and other family members for decades and I have understandably done whatever I could to distance myself from this person, the mere mention of the name is distressing and Id rather it didnt taint my childs birth certificate.

Whats the legal stance on this ? I havent been able to find any guidance on above by googling so if someone could post the relevant sources, this would be amazing.

    Thanks a lot,

    Beyondtired

Unless a document expressly requires that you provide any former name(s) then you have no obligation to do so.

I should mention that there is no rule in English law, that you must refer to yourself by the name on your birth certificate, or any subsequent document that changed your name, e.g. by deed poll.

You can call yourself whatever you want - today, for example, I may wish to be known as Shifty Lawyer Esq - tomorrow i may wish to be known as Madame Overy.

Changed mine in 1998 - never been asked for or had any reason to give my birth name.

This is great news, so unless on some form it says 'have you ever been known by any other names' like for a CRB check or similar, I never have to declare birth name ?
