  • Static caravan

Hello, new on here and I see static caravans come up for discussion,
We had a static put on our land adjoining garden back in 2006 , it was originally put there for family use, visiting relatives etc. We ended up helping friends out and let them stay and consequently someone reported to the council, a council rep paid us a visit and without inspecting the van advised that we should register it for council tax. This we did with no issues and have had it rented out for 10 years paying council tax.
The last Tennant moved out and we feel that it is now to old and tired to accommodate full time living,
It is OK for the odd visiting relative and or office use for myself.
My question is how to get it deregistered from paying council tax, from what I've seen it doesn't seem that easy, any help would be gratefully received. Thanks

Getting it removed can be easy or it can be a faff - I see probably 2 or 3 similar caravan issues over banding each year, so it's not hugely common but they do come up. The legal arguments crosses over between council tax legislation and valuation legislation and the usage of the caravan. Ultimately & in due course, if the VOA refuse, you can ask for a tribunal to decide but, from what you have said, there it should be relatively straightforward to get in removed.
