Possible crime?

There is a empty house next door that has now been bought by a developer.
whilst removing a wall upstairs in the empty house the builder exposed our once concealed loft space where a water tank was.
was was not informed and our property was entered to remove the tank.

As a result of exposing our loft the builders then stole over £1000 of personal artefacts including my wife’s designer wedding dress and person belongings.

I confronted them but they obviously denied all knowledge and the police informed us that without proof we couldn’t do anything.

Is there any legal grounds we could pursue to be compensated for the theft?

A nasty surprise, but as police said you need proof, even for a civil claim you would need to identify the person responsible.

On the other hand it seems that the dividing wall that has been broken through is a party wall.
Were you given advance notice in writing that this wall would be affected by their works?
If not you might have a right of action for breach of the Party Wall Act as they have prevented you exercising your right to refer a possible dispute to a Party Wall Surveyor for an award under section 10 of that act.
