  • Dog kills a cat

Hi - I have had a wretched day. I own two rescue greyhounds.

This morning, after I had fed them, I let them into my garden. I then went upstairs to get ready for work. I then heard a horrendous noise and ran back downstairs. One of my dogs had a beautiful cat in his mouth. It was just horrendous. I am an animal lover and this whole incident has really upset me, as you can imagine.
My dog ran into the conservatory with the cat still in his mouth. I shouted for him to drop it, which he did immediately. I got the dogs into the hall and then went back to see how the cat was but sadly it had passed away.

I respectively wrapped the lovely animal in a towel and placed her in a box.

My dog was bleeding badly with bites and scratches.

I did not recognise the cat. I rang the vets and asked if I could bring the cat into the surgery to be scanned.
It was confirmed that the cat belonged to a family who live on my cul de sac.
My dog was treated for his injuries costing over £100.
The vet said she would contact the owners.

I rang this afternoon, from work, to see if they had been informed and I was told that they had collected the poor cat.

So about half an hour ago, the husband and wife knocked on my front door. I apologised profusely for what had happened. They have said I have a dangerous dog (he isn't - he is really soft) and they have reported us to the Police. They said I have not trained it properly. They said it could be a child next time. I honestly do not think there is any danger of that - I do home checks for possible new owners of retired greyhounds and he has always been on extremely good behaviour with any of the children he has met.

I totally understand their anger and being so upset but when the wife started swearing at me and shouting, I closed the door and said that I thought we should talk about it again when we had all calmed down and not as upset.

What can I do? What could happen?

They say they want him muzzled at all times. I am happy to do this on walks but surely he has the right to be let free in our own garden, which we have made really secure, so he cannot escape. It is just really unfortunate and sad that the cat got into our garden. She must have climbed a tree (probably after birds) and jumped into the garden.

I am so upset about it. Any advice please .............

Hi - one last thing, my Vet gave my details to the cat owners. Is this breaking GDPR? Thanks
