One of the executors of my father's will is the family solicitor. When selling my fathers home (after our father died) the estate agent recommended a local solicitor to handle the conveyance. However the family lawyer advised that she was not prepared to be represented by another solicitor and would handle the conveyance herself as it would be more efficient and cost effective for the estate. She basically vetoed the use of another solicitor to handle the conveyance. The house was sold, a straightforward sale, and the estate has received an invoice from the family solicitor for approx £3,000 (charged on an hourly basis for her time) for the conveyance which I would say is 3 times what we would have expected. Was it appropriate for the solicitor to essentially veto the appointment of another solicitor to handle the conveyance? We are very close to the end of the process with Dad's estate just waiting for confirmation of the final tax position so we are reluctant to stir the pot at this late stage but we have always felt uncomfortable with the way the conveyance was handled both in terms of the refusal to work with another solicitor and the sheer cost of the conveyance
