  • Ex wants car back to sell or vt

    Hi All
my boyfriend gifted me a came which was on finance we split up 18 months after but he agreed for me to have the car registered on my name and he would continue to pay for it, he has just been in contact to say he isn't in a position to carry on the payments and would have to sell it or do a voluntary termination, I'm not in a position to take the car on so told I will hand it back I've had the car serviced and maintained whilst ive had it and have all the documents the finance company are asking for like V5 which is registered in my name, service record, it's a 2007 and has low mileage of approx 72k, I've been told I can just hand it over to my ex but where do I stand with the V5 do I write to dvla to say I passed it back
or is there another form I have to fill in?
I will be purchasing a smaller car (cash sale) so will tax and insure this from scratch and have the new car registered to me
will I have any come backs regarding the car that is on finance with my ex partners name even though it is registered on logbook to me

Log book only registers who is liable for tax etc on the car, not who actually owns it. (which is the finance company until paid off) if it were me, if the finance is in his name then send the log book off in his name then let him sort out the VT. You can do online so he would get log book back quickly so he will be able to give back with the car.

If the finance is in your ex's name then i believe it's his responsibility.

      Agree with Aukey,

Complete the change of registered keeper to his name and let him sort it - faster doing it online https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle
If you have a question about the voluntary termination process, please read this guide first, as it should have all the answers you need. Please do not hijack another person's thread as I will not respond to you
