  • adoption & safeguarding

Hi hopefully someone can give us some advice on our next step.

Me & my partner are at the very end of the process of adoption after a year & we are matched with two little childern of which we are about to start introductions with ,unfortunately the house we live next to has just been rented out to a homeless charity which has singed a contract for a 5 year term with the new owner of which, is a local estate agent who themselfs purchased the property last year from the owner before, now the estate owner himself sits on the trustee of the charity.

The house is being rented out by a inflated price by public money as the local council use this charity as a third party to house the local homeless, the house is in a terrace of homes with our house joined onto it, with all our bedrooms & living quarters a joined as well as the gardens with just a fence , all the windows at the back overlook our property.

The property is empty at the moment as the local community are causing delays in the moving in processs , but has been fitted out to take five individuals with 5 self contained rooms all of which back on to all our rooms, the charity own a few propertys in the area but the one nextdoor is the only one that is not a self contained property & will not have any one at the property to manage it, all done by remote via cctv at this one only.

The charity did not inform any of the local residents & we only found out what was a foot by mistake by a third party, we rang the charity to confirm this & they did, as we are just about to adopt we felt this was a safeguarding issue for the children we are just about to adopt " we were in a state of shock & worry" , but we were told by the ceo of the charity on the phone " don't know what all the fuss is about", we were amazed by the flippent attitude as we wanted to gather information to how many people & who were going to be living there & to what were past & would this have any affect on us as a family.
No information was forth coming & we felt they were being underhanded , so we contacted our social services to get advise & to see if they could help us with our concerns,to our amazement the ceo of the charity had contacted our adoption team before we were contact them to be able to find out if our adoption would be stopped , the answer was no it would not be stopped , all wonderful its seems , our social worker did not seemed concerned at all , just by being told over the telephone by the charity there would not be a problem with they residents , our adoption team took everything that that charity said as fact .

The council social services team have a duty to safeguard any child in they care or children coming into they care & we find it unbelievable they no research or due diligence or even a risk assessment on possible problems ahead, none has been taken out on the charitys workings & successful rehabilitation of any residents they have ever rehomed.

We had to do research ourselfs as well as other residents of the street as many of them are worried what affect this will have on the local community , we found out the the charity only has a successful rate of 20% of its residents being rehomed permanently , the rest go back on the streets , which would mean 4 out of 5 residents living next door, some would still be a risk from some addiction or metalhealth issues & we were told that there would be residents placed in the home that some would have served time inside but we would never be told what for.

We are at our wits end to see a good ending to this as we feel that the last thing we would want to do is place two young children into a environment that we cannot guarantee safety of these children as they already have come from a place that was not positive for them , we are beginning to feel that the only option for us to safeguard these children would be to pull out of the process of adoption & hopefully they will be picked up by another adoption couple which of course would mean much longer in foster care,.

Please if anyone could help with what would be our best next step , please help , sorry about the spelling but its just gone 3 in the morning & I feel a bit al over the place .

    kind regards jb
