  • Party Wall Question

    Hi

We have a double thickness garden wall between our house and next door. They have taken down one side of the wall and are planning on using these extra inches to build an extension on the side of their house.

    Can they do this please?

    Many thanks

    Hi and welcome

Whether or not they may build an extension will firstly depend on planning laws.

Also was the wall built on the boundary line, or on one side of it.
If it was built on boundary line with 50% on each adjoining property, has the removal of one skin been carried out professionally without weakening the remaining structure?
    Is the wall ownership shared?
Check your deeds or land registry file to see if there are answers there.

If the wall is built on boundary line, and neighbours intend building up to that line above soil level, how are they going to insert a foundation strip which by necessity will have to extend into your property ? or does the existing wall have a foundation suitable for taking their extension?

I would anticipate they could have problems without your co operation.
How well do you get along with your neighbours?
