I am completely mortified. It was a genuine mistake that I left a store without paying for some items that were in my trolley (under a pile of old recycle bags). Security guard stopped me outside the store as I approached my car and asked me to come back in which I did. They took me into a room and then informed me cause the value was more than £10 then they would need to call the police. The value was £65. hey tried calling the police repeatedly but never got to speak with anyone as it was in a queue. I offered to go to a police station to explain myself and cause I’d provided ID and they knew my car reg they agreed to let me go. They said they would inform the police and Tesco will be writing to me with a ban from the store but in the meantime not to visit the store until this is resolved. My question is should I contact the police myself or just sit tight? What will happen to me as they got all the items back. If I get a criminal record I certainly would loose my job. I have never been in trouble before.

Hi there
Don't be worried about the police calling, as it is most unlikely now.
I take it you haven't admitted to theft as it was in error that the goods were unpaid for.
At this stage, without your admittance and presumably with only very little concrete evidence, the police won't want to know.
However if you do get an invitation to an interview, do not attend alone.
Take either your own solicitor, or request the duty solicitor (free) accompanies you.
This is your right : enforce it.
In this instance the police will not be your friends!
You may not hear again from Tesco, but you will receive a demand for shedloads of money from a firm called DWF .
Although their letters are scary and threaten all sorts, just ignore them.
If there were any genuine losses Tesco could take action in the civil courts to recover them, but there aren't any so they won't.
I understand DWF retain about 40% of all they collect, so it's a nice little earner for both parties
