  • Anyone here know anything about SEN education practice in mainstream schools?

Hi. Im trying to find out what I can do to help my son. I have been asking for the schools to test him for dyslexia for the last 10 years. I have been told that he isn't severe enough to be tested, not enough money etc etc. Then last week they told me they had tested him at 15 and he had severe dyslexia.

Today I asked if he could drop some GCSE's. He needs to catch up. He needs support. He needs a break. He has also recently been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and anxiety - both of which I am sure stem from the anxiety he feels at not being able to retain information or work well at school. The school said no. They didn't think it was the right thing for him. He has been labeled as trouble for the last 3 years as he is disruptive and has all the behavioural challenges of an "off page" dyslexia diagnosis, the one they haven't seen the need for. They also lied and said he had taken one and passed - he hadnt - go figure!

Any thoughts on if I can challenge this decision and if so to who?

    Many thanks

    which area are you?
I had a run in with a school in respect to granddaughter being bullied, in amongst all my digging I did come across the SEN info, can’t remember now whether it was on the schools website or local education authority information.
You will have to be prepared to fight for it, however the good news they are obliged to assist.

First stop is always the school's own policies. These should be available on the website or on request. Get hold of the ones which have a link to your situation and study them. If they are not being followed make a complaint based around the fact that they are not following policy.
