  • At last! matching surplus food with social need

    http://www.theguardian.com/business/...s-queens-award

I know this story is a few weeks old but I Just got around to reading it and think it is totally brilliant. There is a huge amount of waste at food manufacturing plants and let’s face it, very few people would reject a loaf of bread at 20p because the packaging is a bid squiffy.
This is about basic food products but many manufacturers of skincare and similar products also dump tons of product every year. I know we should be just talking about essentials but remember ‘give us bread but give us roses’. Those who are in desperate need the odd treat more than most.

An optimist is someone who falls off the Empire State Building, and after 50 floors says, 'So far so good'!

Though since then his business has be successful.

I don't see why we should be talking about essentials only, I agree about those in need deserving the odd treat  ... most foodbanks I've heard about do more than 'just food' (many hand out toiletries, hair brushes, tooth paste/brushes and sweets for the kids etc... too). Have you seen these old(ish) links??

Totally agree with you. Just because the packaging is damaged on a load of toilet paper, doesn't mean they can be sold. Someone will need them or want them.

Yes i heard about the french MP's wanting to make it law, and i think the same should be done here - Hell only other week a couple walked free from caught from stealing perfectly safe to eat food from a supermarkets bin that had been thrown out of waste, after the judge struck out the case due to the supermarket not actually suffering any loss due to the food having no value to the supermarket (i.e. being waste in supermarkets eyes).

And yes i have heard of spoiled veg and fruit being used to make soup and juice etc. Nothing wrong with that either.

and don't forget about Muscle Food too - http://www.musclefood.com

They're good for bulk buy meat and dairy (although I always use my local butcher ... it's a bit more expensive, but well worth it for the customer service Kevin gives us )

Many of the supermarkets chase off people rummaging through the discarded food. I notice that food that is about to go out of date is not reduced in price until the very last minute and then it is like fighting over a lame gazelle on the Serengeti Plain. Pees me off!
