Cheap overseas calls?

I have the skype for home but cant use it from my mobile

tha majority of my family and friends live overseas and my mobile bill is HUGE! MY OH was looking at all the cheap overseas calls websites and found some that you just have dial a number before the phone number and voila super cheap call...

for expample Cheap calls to UAE - United Arab Emirates - 9p/min

So the question is do they work? Are then some kind of con?

Not so long ago my brother-in-law gave me numbers like that as he used them all the time,and he is a real penny pincher,although I have not used them personally.

This is not a con, don't worry. You will be billed for the 0871 call only, which is around 9p per minute, as they point out on the site.

Companies like planet-numbers buy "minutes" in bulk at wholesale rates from various carriers and then sell them on, with their own profit margin added.

The non-geographic 0870 and 0871 number ranges have a fixed price from most carries, of around 9p per minute, of which only a few pence goes to the carrier. So as long as they have purchased the minutes to, for example the UAE for less than that 9p, they make a profit when you dial the 0871 number they provide - that profit coming from the difference between the cost of the call to the UAE, the cost of the 0871 call to them and the 9p per minute that you get billed for dialling that number.

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of these resellers out there.
