Solicitor Advocate

Hi folks, can anyone tell me what a solicitor has to do to be able to call themselves a 'Solicitor Advocate' ?

I know it means they can address a court, but do they have to sit exams or pass some kind of selection process or is it by invitation or some other method?

I need to know as a certain Solicitor Advocate has been somewhat naughty and I need to bring him down a peg or two...as you do!

Asa far as I know there are additional qualifications that have to be obtained. Once qualified as such they are allowed to plead as a barrister in the Higher Courts normally excluded to solicitors and are the domain of Barristers registered with the Bar Council, BUT only in the specialist areas of Law they have studied for such qualification. If that makes sense.
I stand to be corrected but I think that they remain on the Law Society register and are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and not the Bar Council.

Thanks Garlok, I did read somewhere that barristers were not overly struck on solicitors muscleing-in on their patch, bit like Minicabs and licenced taxi's I guess, but it would be helpful to know exactly what these folks have to do to get this higher status as it'll make my job easier when whipping the legs from under this one for what's been done.

A solicitor advocate can act in both civil and criminal proceedings address the Courts and conduct a case on his own in any and all such proceedings. County Court, High Court, Appeal Courts ..... Supreme Court....anything legal
They are pretty expensive people.
