They were set up by their work colleagues and she was allergic to roses. The meal gave them food poisoning and any thoughts they would get on, quickly ended, as they began to hate the ground each other walked on. When they recovered, they tried one more time, only to end up killing each other.
That is what really happened, the first bit is just a fairy tale.
