I'm not arguing with you shell - I'm interested in the pros and cons of Scottish Independence (and what it will mean, not just to the Scots but to the Brits too). All I ever seem to read/hear about it at the moment is things like the article I posted (and I'm not a Daily Mail reader personally but DO read things if they are pointed out to me). I always take things such as the above 'news' with a pinch of salt, and don't make assumptions without learning all the facts first.

What, for you, are the main benefits of Independence?? Can you see any problems occurring if Scotland does vote 'yes'??

Then of course there is the fact that Westminster has already stated that there will be punitive action against Scotland if we vote no and stay in the UK. Just for having the cheek to want to be independent.

It will not chance ANYTHING in my life if they say yes or no.
The debate should be reported in Scotland only as us Englanders have no vote >

LOL Des but its getting boring reading and seeing so much about it in the media It would take a clever man to pull the truth from some of the arguments.

But I do agree that the reporting for those outside of Scotland is a bit much

With the resources that Scotland have, I cannot see any problem with them being allowed to join Europe.
But maybe the Jocks, like most of us Brits, want nothing to do with Europe.
I have Scottish relatives and I say, bloody good luck to them.........:thumb:

This is fantastic and vital discussion as despite many, many reports and debates many people are still not clear on what impact independence will have.:thumb:
National pride may cloud people’s judgement regarding the economic realities of Scottish independence. Kevin Bridges said they will show Braveheart the night before the referendum but should also show Trainspotting for balance!:faint2:
The nationalistic view can never be underestimated but with so many families struggling to make ends meet the socioeconomic impact is going to be the deciding factor. Perhaps an independent Scottish Parliament will make a better job of running things but despite all the reports and debates no one can be sure until it actually happens. It is a gamble.
I do not think Scotland will ever turn into the North of Ireland. There has been and will always be sectarian issues in Glasgow, or ‘Belfast Light’ as it is known, but this will not escalate or diminish regardless of what flag flies over Holyrood. That ongoing battle is based on religious bigotry and has nothing to do with nationalism.
The Daily Mail will be delighted if Scotland becomes independent; yet another bunch of foreigners coming in taking jobs and threatening the good middle class. Perhaps they will start reporting on raiding parties coming over Hadrian’s Wall and steeling livestock!!!!msl:

I agree with you PAWS. I live in Central Scotland. After listening to the debate between Salmond and Darling last night I still feel there are far too many uncertainties going it alone.

Practical question for anyone: What happens to all those financial companies that have their head office in England but still have a significant number of customers in Scotland? Administration wise how would that work? Interest rate differences/currency differences (potentially). I have this image in my head of trying to get money out of the cash machine and not being able to due to 'technical difficulties'.

Maybe I am over imagining things, but as I said there are far too many uncertainties. The economic/social problems Scotland has at the moment will not (in my opinion) just evaporate if we become independent.

Furthermore, Salmond talked last night about a mandate being negotiated so that we can keep the pound sterling. I cannot believe this has been left until just three weeks before the referendum. This 'mandate' should have been prepared months ago!

Why arnt the rest of the brits being asked about what consequences an independent Scotland should have, prior the vote.

Does anyone know if there are any legal commitments for the brits, financially or contractually that we can nit ge tout of if they vote for independence. Salmond annoyed me last night, was acting like a teanage boy.... . I would not trust him to run the finaces of a minimarket, never mind an ecconomy. Alister Darling has proven experience.

Why are they all sky blue dreaming about the price of oil staying high... never going to happen. Electric motors have already taken over..
