  • Profiteering!

I've just bought a packet of 19 Players' Super-king cigarettes from the local filling station.

On calculating the cost, I worked out that each cigarette cost 7/9½d !

After reading all the press articles about the dangers incurred by smoking, I have decided to give up.

Was wondering why i never see you at the local co-op anymore. I guess it's because you gave up going when they started putting the men's mags in plain packaging lol

Some cigarettes are still packed 20 to a box, but some brands now contain only 19.

One simply cannot obtain the flat boxes of Egyptian blend cigarettes formerly made by Sullivan Powell, nor can one get Balkan Sobranie.

I bought 2 cigs and 5 matches with what should have been my dinner money while at school.
What a fool I was, not saying I have many regrets in my life but the biggest was ever putting a cig in my mouth.

Mixed feelings.... enjoyed smoking from about age 12 (behind bikesheds) for about 15 years.
How cool, black ciggies with gold tips in slimline chrome case, or those extra fat Perfectos Finos, or double length weekend cigarettes.... But then cost of 60 a day, OH on 40.....and thank God we both gave up about 40 years ago.

And Balkan Sobranies & cocktails are still available from specialist suppliers for £10.39 for a pack of 20

Yes, but in those days they were good for you :tinysmile_twink_t2: (and cost-effective). My grandfather, who was born in the 1880's, fought in two world wars and smoked remarkably heavily from the age of 10 until the age of 89, when he was advised to give up smoking during a bout of influenza (smoking having by then been identified as being very bad for you). He died from a heart attack a week later (attributed to childhood rheumatic fever). He referred to cigarettes as "The hungry man's food, the frightened man's courage, the poor man's wealth, the worried man's comfort and the lonely man's friend". He so enjoyed smoking that he introduced his granddaughter to it at a tender age and later on enjoyed with her the novelty herbal cigarettes that came into vogue during the 60s.

Even (Vince Cable - actually it wasn't him but that scary bald chap in the Labour Party) some politician has said that (paraphrase) taking away the right to smoke (or making it too expensive) unfairly removes a source of pleasure from the poor (in particular).

I do agree with you though Enaid - nicotine is the most addictive drug known to man and smoking does become an expensive chore, even after you stop.

Remember my Uncle sending me for "A packet of coffin nails and a pennyworth of hell of a lot drops"
He smoked Players and the hell of a lot drops were midget gems ( for me!)
                              Always got served!
Must have been between six and nine because he passed away when I was ten.
