  • Aduit Friendly day trips

For all you who's chicks have flown the nest, or just want time to not be mum/dad and be you.

My first suggestion has to be Whitby.
Beautiful town, sea veiws, the abbey you can tour, James Cook's museum, WONDERFUL fish and chips and places you can sit and just listen to the ocean.
You can take a road from the A1 across the incredible North Yorkshire Moors, stopping off in Pickering to take the Steam train to Goathland (Heartbeat's Aidensfield) and just enjoy the beauty.
This trip is perfect with or without little people, and well worth a try.

While you are in the North, how about Howath?
This is the village the Bronte's lived in but a word of warning, they do not like cars. You will be ticketed if you park, and they DO NOT back down, take the bus from Keightley.
There is a steam railway, shops, the old parsonage the girls grew up in, and I would not suggest this is a child friendly day out, unless you fancy MAAAAAAAM.. DAAAAAAD I'm BOOOOOORED!!

York is a wonderful day out too, musuems and places to eat out..

Further down the country we have the incredible Sherwood Forest for all you dog owners, and you can drop by Rufford Park and see an old abbey and a mill with a ford. The memory of my dogs running through the ford barking at each other still brings a smile to my face, and the bluebell wood is incredible.

Still heading south we have Nottingham, beautiful city but a pig to park in, and derby is beautiful too, both have incredible cathedhrals and Nottingham Castle is a thing to behold!

Turn off the A1 and drive past Thirsk and onwards up Sutton Bank. Watch the gliders going off the top, just a woosh as they go past you. Then East to Whitby.

From your other post: Have still not managed to see all of Beamish. And it's expanded since I was last there.

And the Railway Museum in York is free (well it was the last time I was there). Even SWMBO found it interesting and stayed for most of the day.

The next place is a place of debate in our home, Stratford on Avon.

Me and Mr R went for a day trip... WRRRRRRRRRRONG decision.
We left London at 10am, got the train and got to SOA at abou 2pm (yes it took forever) it was full of egg timers and tea towels and we were told the last train home was at 3pm.
We ran round the town, bought a wall plaque for my dad and grabbed a chinese takeaway we then ate on the train home!!

My B-I-L says its a lovely historical village.. just dont go by train!!!!

          trust you!!!

In London I can fully reccomend the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, beautiful (actual) works of art that you can lose yourself in (unlike the Merde- bit of french for culture there- at the Tate!) art.

I also love Richmond Park, feeding the deer and enjoying the park are lovely, and Chatsworth in Derbyshire is another definate!

Plodder..I recommend Monkey World too..it's a lovely place,,totally family friendly.Well kept picnic areas (don't use concession stands,,prices are horrific)...ample parking..and the paths al around it are wheelchair user friendly.
They supply wheelchairs (and some electric ones) for a refundable deposit.
The viewing areas for the animals are brilliant,,I had a one to one with an orang-u-tan through a window,,so special it made me cry, looking at the 'Old Man of the Jungle',,literally face to face.
And lets be honest,,ya gotta love the monkeys.
The staff were efficient, polite and more than happy to answer questions.
We loved it and are going back again this year as my 25,,yes 25 year old son whinged cos we didn't take him msl:

For a romantic semi affordable day, try Oxford.
It is GORGEOUS and the older parts are well worth a look, perfect for a stroll and a coffee

                      It could have been worse.

You might have misread the title as "ADULT ONLY GAY TRIPS".

It's just as well that the Royal Umpire Exhibition and "theme park" at Croston closed down.

The "Royal Umpire" was an apparently genuine mail, stage coach from the 19th century, which was exhibited alongside a few other traps and carts, and an old car (an Austin 7 Ruby, if memory serves). Another attraction was the Wild West Town, in a field nearby that had been (mostly) cleared of grass.

None of the buildings was really open to the public, which was probably as well. One could not really come to much harm as one peered in through the (unglazed) windows or through roped-off doorways. The buildings were made with reclaimed timber from a variety of sources, extensively patched with bits from old tea chests. The "town" was sparsely populated by a few shop window dummies, some of which lacked an arm and one of which seemed to cope remarkably well as the barber despite having no head. At the far end of the main street, there was a huge iron cauldron with a sign in front: "Pot for boiling missionaries".

On one side, there was a signpost directing one to "the water otter". The track through the overgrown shrubs wound round and round in a serpentine manner, crossing itself once or twice, until it opened up to a small clearing with a small pond in the middle; on an island in the pond, there was a rusty Ascot geyser! A couple who had followed me down the path just stared and stared at it, as their look of astonishment added to my barely concealed mirth. "So where's this water otter?" one of them asked.
I just pointed and burst out laughing, "There it is! Wouldn't it make water 'otter?"

I still wonder if they ever did get the entrance fee refunded.

The Vauxhall Tavern was always a good night out but most definately NOT for children.

CC thats like going to B&Q and asking for a hammerfore!
and if you dont know what a hammerfore is.. its for hammering nails you idiot

I was going to suggest the Lowry Museum in Manchester, great for art crap for concerts (but thats another story) until I remembered that I hadn't done a lot of "Southern" days out so, must make amends for that one.

Saint Albans is a lovely place, the abbey and shopping, a nice relaxed atmosphere and easy to get to, and I used to be able to walk thought the National History museum and OOH and Ahh at the dinosaurs to my hearts content, till they made it crap by "Improving" it.

The british museum is incredibly interesting, as is the Museum of London with all the Viking exhibits

Towards the west may I thouroughly reccomend (and yes I do get a bit teary over the sheer memory of this one) the beautiful town of Bath, my old stomping ground and the place I class as "home". Totally beautiful town with the Roman Baths which are so gorgeous they will take your breath away, the beautiful old lace shops, where muggins who cannot sew up the end of a turkey bought a job lot because it was so beautiful ( it made the Daughter's parasol when she arrived), and the beautiful catherdral, or abbey, which is just that beautiful it WILL make you cry.

Then off to Victoria Park for a picnic and watching the Tourists climb Jacob's Ladder (one step for every day of the year), and if a local asks you did you leave your hat at the bottom.. you didn't

then a short drive to Cheddar Gorge to marvel at nature, before a trip to Stone Henge and the lovely town of Salisbury for a meal

                            AHHHH bliss

StoneHenge is a good place for a picnic too.....I'm a history geek so Osborne House on the Isle of Wight is a must.
Obviously my problems preclude me from climbing stairs etc so we tend to go to places with known ease of access.
We joined English Heritage this year which opens up a whole new variety of places to visit.
