I was under the impression the telephone cable plugging into the modem could conduct the energy through to the computer which is why you had to unplug it. This is going back to pre-broadband days of course. No idea whether lighting could also damage the router.
    Hiya FP!

Yes, lightening can damage everything (sorry to be a bad fairy) x

No worries MissFM, thunderstorms are rather uncommon round these parts.

Well, I used the oven this morning and tonight and it didn't trip the switch. I switched off the outlet from the wall before opening the oven door because last night the trip occurred when I opened the oven door, door was left open & switch wouldn't stay up, till I switched if off from the wall.

Looks like there is an intermittent fault on the oven, connected with the door circuitry (needs to make sure no power with door open). Dump it or get repaired. But then small microwave ovens are so cheap these days.

The main point of the wall switch (fused spur) is to trip (cut off) the electricity supply to the appliance if it senses a fault so it's isolated from the rest of the electric circuit. While you may have got round the problem by 'silencing' the switch you may still have the electric fault which could cause you to suffer a lethal shock :eek2: Microwaves are cheap but your life is valuable  You don't want that written on your tombstone :rip:

When you put it like that...

...there I was, worrying I may be endangering my Sky box or my electrical system rather than my life! :scared:

It's reassuring to see someone wants me to stay alive!
