Hi, Can someone please explain to me how having 1st choice and 2nd choice of candidate works in voting in an election?

Re: PCC Elections
If there are only two candidates you can only vote for one, you do not have to pick two.
Working out the resultThe votes are counted in each PCC area. If a candidate has won more than 50% of first preferences they are elected.
If no candidate has won more than 50%, all but the top two candidates are then eliminated.
Any second preferences for the top two candidates from the eliminated candidates are added to the two remaining candidates' totals. Whoever has the most votes combined is declared the winner.
Counting is expected to begin on Friday 16 November, apart from in Wiltshire where it will take place overnight
All info on here it is to do with percentages http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-20257548

Re: PCC Elections
There's an ex-copper standing where I am. He's vehemently anti-privatisation of the police, whilst the Tory candidate thinks it is perfectly acceptable to privatise the police. Privatisation of the police is a step in the wrong direction and allows corporations to influence policing matters covertly.Life is a journey on which we all travel, sometimes together, but never alone.

Re: PCC Elections
This is something that puzzles me too - am about to go down and vote but have NO IDEA who to vote for - there is a mixture of politicians and ex-policemen - some unequivocal on police privatization (agree absolutely with Bluebottle - it mustn't happen) but we know very, very little about any of them. It's an incredibly highly-paid job with huge influence - should it be an ex- policeman or a politician - what does anyone think (particularly police or ex-police)?

Re: PCC Elections
Vote for the candidate that might want the money cos I am afraid I am not voting today. None of em asked for my vote, I hardly know what they stand for and unfortunately, I cannot be arsed!!!"Family means that no one gets forgotten or left behind"

The answer is that they are very worried by plunging turnouts. Voter cynicism means that more and more people (the young particularly), are no longer buying into the system. And that, as the establishment well knows, is the road to revolution.
The first and second (or even more), choice system allows the successful candidate to claim to have a democratic mandate when in reality they don't.
