Re: How do you feel about Conscription ?

I agree with capital punishment where there is no doubt, for people like the Yorkshire Ripper, and instead of giving the young ones community service or suspended sentences, put them in the army for a couple of years,The army gives them discipline and teaches respect,
Schools and parents are not allowed to discipline ,thats why we have thugs and muggers etc,
The parent is more likely to be in trouble these days, and the kids say ,they will report the parents to childline, and they would probably be believed these days,if the even parents raised a hand,

The writing is so bad you can't decipher it.
          The cv's are badly written
You get statements like 'I want to be a footballer/beautician/film star but I'm willing to work in an office until I find my ideal job'
          or
'I am really good a mucking things up and will do so at every opportunity if you employ me'
then if you find a half decent candidate, you ask them to come for an interview they are either late, slovenly, dirty, unkempt or just don't bother turning up at all, so after all that its no wonder the older ones among us are more valued in the workplace.

Then there's the wage situation, we always pay over the minimum but when training of course its not as high as a trained person, the young ones don't want to gain the experience and wait for a raise.
But thats more down to bad education and poor parenting - Are youngster responsible for the poor education and parental guidance and poor parental upbringing? No its the generation before them, after all there teachers and parents are from the generation(s) that came before them. If they put better effot into educating them and teaching them and making sure they actually lesson to their teachers and their parents encouraged them to learn and do well in school. Then their handwriting would be better (mines dreadful by the way, and you can't judge people by what they put on paper about themselves) they would be more willing to learn and build a career for themselves.

When i used to employ people before i switched to paying them a commission on self-employed basis, i had loads of youngsters applying for jobs. Most of them were really good and made lots of sales which earnt them £100's each month in bonuses on top of their wage which was just above the national minumum too. Most of them had never sold anything in their lifes to strangers except for on ebay etc. They were taught how to sell and sales techniques involved, and not just given a sales pitch and told to get on the phone like a lot of companies in sales do.

Off course the standards of youngster leaving school or further education may vary in different areas, but in all areas you always get the odd one that point blank refuse to learn, have an attitude etc. But thats down to poor education and bad parenting. I find that if you listen to them and talk to them, they realise your wanting to help them, and they will open up to you and actually show willing to learn and make something of themselves.

Too much gets blamed on bad parenting and whilst I concur that some parents should have been sterilised at birth ,not all OIKS are the product of bad parents , a lot of them choose the wrong path because they think it's a fast track to an easy life.
No parent can make a kid behave and learn at school, some are just out and out clowns and disrupt lessons, hardly fair on those who actually want to learn. And they complain about not getting jobs then rock up to interviews solely to get their benefits.
I still think National Service should be introduced again..

True, but then whos to blame for those that can't be bothered to get of their arses, or prefer to be on benefits? Surely its not the younsgters themselves after all they weren't the ones that decided to give them said benefits! Those that disrupt classes clearly don't know how to behave and respect teachers and other pupils, why are they like that? Easy, its because they are allowed to be like that at home and have not be taught by their parents to respect their elders or other people.

Re: How do you feel about Conscription ?

Conscription? NOOOO, But good education is a step in the right direction. I believe the rot started when all the pollies were turned into universities. 50% of youngsters with degrees but unable to spell or count... Then school curriculum was changed to ensure that 50% can get to the university. And they still can't spell or count. Then of course, our mein leaders decided to start charging for university education, so here we have 50% of youngsters who can't spell or count, have a university degree and a debt of £xxxxx. Welcome to the 21st century.

Did you suggest they might consider a career in the Civil Service?

Re: How do you feel about Conscription ?

Well it wont be deemed wrong by europe as most of the EU countries have conscription of one sort or another . As to defence my understanding is that for a defence to be credible in a modern developed nation the budget should be between two and four percent of GDP . At the moment we are at the very botom of that league .
As to constcription \I canunderstand the pont about getting people into something other than hanging around . However I think a radical rethink of how we relate to our under 25s is needed . I lack the wisdom to be sure ofthe correct answers, but training and aprenticeships so no one has an excuse for hanging around on street corners. Our ecomomy is geared at the moment away from manufaturing (10% of IIRC. However we are currently world leaders in entertainment and arts , particulaly games development . I know some us old fogies dont play games much but the market is massive.

As to capital punisment I have to say I am against it completely . But as a quaker I am of the opinion that killing people is always wrong . It sometimes may be the last option but it is never right .

Re: How do you feel about Conscription ?

Seduared..I respect your opinion totally.Capital punishment is always dodgy ground for a debate,I have always been pro it in the right cases, obviously there are many cases where there is too many 'grey' areas but there are also many many evil sadistic prisoners being housed in our already overloaded 'penal'system who gave no thought to taking lives so why should theirs be spared?I'm very much an eye for an eye person..hurt me I hurt you back 10 fold.
Training and apprenticeships is a good idea, but with no one 'cracking the whip' then there will be those that just think 'ppfftt I aint going ,they can't make me'.I may be old fashioned as a parent of an under 25 but I took a huge interest in my sons education,he didn't get a chance to 'go off the rails' because I was there, poking my nose in his business.all the time.He managed to convince me he needed a 'gap year' before Uni,but he worked in that year.
A lot of the problem in our society is kids having kids.
