and this just in from the BBC

          UK soldier dies in Afghanistan

A British soldier has been killed by an individual wearing an Afghan Army uniform, the Ministry of Defence says.
The incident took place in the Nad-e Ali area of Helmand province. The soldier's family has been informed.
A total of 437 members of the UK military have died in Afghanistan since operations started in 2001.
More than 60 soldiers serving with the Nato coalition have been killed so far this year by their Afghan colleagues in so called green on blue attacks.
The incidents have prompted questions about security in Afghanistan after 2014, when responsibility is due to be handed over to local military.
But the Afghan government and Nato have put a number of measures in place to try to stop these attacks including the deployment of hundreds of Afghan intelligence officers to monitor the behaviour of soldiers and recruits.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Major Laurence Roche, said: "This is incredibly sad news for the Battalion and everyone serving in Task Force Helmand.
"As we mark Remembrance this weekend, our thoughts now turn to the soldier's family and friends whose loss is so much greater than ours".

              Re: Lest We Forget

There was a shop in the war called The Peoples Pantry, which was a decoy for the bomb factory situated behind it,My Mum worked there and one of the only storys she ever told us was that she and my Aunty Marian worked there,my Mum was a very short woman (4ft 11(nearly)) but had the personality of 10,,she was bright, funny, quickwitted and very much the voice of many,
As the story goes,Old Hitler had a field day the night before, lots of bombs going off,,Our Lilly (Mum) decided to voice her considerable opinion at the factory the next day,so the workforce thought she would be the best person to sort him out,,picked her up,,popped her in a casing,,wrote 'Herr Hitler..a gift from us to you..bet you surrender now '' on the side and refused to let her out for ages !!
Neither of my parents really talked about what went on,they were younger than my own son is now which is a scary comparison..I will never forget so many gave their lives.Nor the people who worked so tirelessly away from enemy lines ,the unsung heroes'.They didn't have todays 'technology' they relied on instinct, gut feeling, intelligence and resourcfulness.

                Re: Lest We Forget

My late father in law was in Burma, in the Forgotten Army (Mum was up Buckingham Palace on VE day screaming THE WARS NOT OVER!! MY FREDS STILL FIGHTING IN BURMA!!) he never once told us what he did there, but the nightmares he had were horrific!
I still put the poppies on their photos every year (although Dad knocks his poppy off every year just to watch me putting it back up... old sod!)

While there s the ability to print out photographs, and there are photo frames, we WILL remember!

BTW, just as a side thought, I was planning on naming The Girl Poppy..... till someone pointed out our surname!!!

                    Re: Lest We Forget

My mother comes from Bristol where, during the war, enemy bombers would try and take out the aircraft factories of Bristol Aircraft Company. The bomb aimers were lousy shots because they missed the factories altogether. In my hometown, a community air raid shelter, accommodating 1,000 civilians suffered a direct hit one night during a bombing raid. Only three people survived, a young baby and two adults. The air raid shelter was sealed. A memorial now stands on the spot where the bomb fell to the memory of those who perished that night.
