    I didn't know that.. honest.

Being of Irish descent piebalds were known as "Tinker Horses".

and yeh, the bloke had a full jazz band playing ragtime, though i must confess when I saw the ma playing the Oompah Loompah i was crying laughing!

At Aiden's funeral we had You'll Never Walk Alone played, perfect for a 23 year old Liverpool fan

even now the sound of the Liverpool fans singing it gives me gooseflesh and reduces me to tears.

A "respectful celebration" of one's passing is the way I prefer to see a funeral. For some, it is perhaps focussed on the sadness that those who remain here feel for the departed. And yes, we each may feel a sadness - so it is good to express that. But, I really do love the idea that we are wishing our dear friend or relative a 'bon voyage,' as they continue on their journey. I similarly love the idea that our dear friend/rellie will be there to welcome us as we eventually cross that gangplank.

I'm no footie fan, Puff, but that song does it for me, too. I dunno why - it just does, dammit.

          Re: A question for Bluebottle.

The only time I've been to a funeral and "You'll Never Walk Alone" was played was a young friend of mine who lost a brave battle against leukaemia. They were only 18 when they died. I have to admit, it brought a lump to my throat.

Funerals are no longer the sombre occasions they used to be and are a celebration of the person's life. I know a couple of local funeral directors who tell me that funerals are a lot lighter than they used to be and people feel lifted when they come away from the funeral, rather than heavy-hearted.

BB please read this is from my daughter. (I'm writing as spelt, im not changing the spellings as she tried really hard.)

            Dear Mr Crompton

My name is Molly and I am nearly 9. Yesterday we saw 2 police ladys on hawses (horses) wich were very pritty. They let me tuch the hawses and told me theyr names. I live at *************************** neer *************** cherch in ********** .
My brover Glen was there to and he pet the hawses and they snifed him.
When I grow up i want to be a police hawse lady to, can i be plese?

            love
            Molly and Glen

            From me:

            Dear Sir,
Please accept my thanks to your two mounted officers who attended **************** church on the sad occasion on 30th July 2012, they allowed my 3 children to approach their horses and pet them, they explained about the care of a horse, and their duties. To this end, my daughter Molly wants to become a mounted police officer, and your officers encouraged her ("study hard and be a good girl, and we may end up training you"). This is the sort of policing out neighbourhood, which was at one time a police no go area, has needed, thank you for encouraging such positivity and child friendlyness to your officers.
I am a very impressed Mam.
            yours

            Puff.

That looks perfect on all counts, Puff. A lot of police officers are unhappy with the way they are being used as revenue officers rather than the peace-keepers and protectors they joined up to be. That will give the two mounted officers a welcome boost and assure them that their primary function - to serve and protect the community - is still there and appreciated by those they serve and protect.

Incidentally, my current avatar is the Archangel Michael who is a protector and the guardian angel of police officers, soldiers and, strangely, funeral directors.

Thanks for that about Archangel Michael - very interesting for me, my son is a soldier and about to leave home on a tour of duty.

Archangel Michael is reputed to carry a sword made of sapphire which emits a blue ray of light. This blue ray of light is said to represent the powers of faith, protection and truth. He is the Warrior Angel and Commander-in-Chief of all Archangels. It is likely that your son will have other guardian angels watching over him, as well as Archangel Michael. My guardian angels are Archangel Gabriel (The Communicator) and two others named Abraham and Esther.
