Our car has sadly failed its MOT

we now sadly have a family funeral in Kent, we live in Yorkshire, and Hubby has been given just 1 day off to attend, atm we have my brother in laws car due to his ill health, which Mr R can drive on our current policy, we have checked, I am a named driver on our policy and my question is, can i drive his car on my insurance, or will he need to include me on his policy.. can i get a temp insurance for his car as I dont own it. I only ask as we are estimating a drive time of 5 hours each way and I dont want Mr R falling asleep at the wheel.

I'd play safe and phone your insurance company if the policy wording is not clear. Also, policies which cover you to drive any car usually only do so on a third party basis. This is perfectly legal, as long as you are aware of and prepared to take the risk.

Sure someone will verify this but if you are a named driver you are not insured on any other car

Yup, as a named driver, you can only drive the car whose insurance you are named on. You will need to get seperate insurance. Your own insurance company might do it or there are companied that deal with short term insurance.

Small warning though, it's usually quite expensive.

Other option is to ask Brother in law to put you onto his insurance as a named driver.

thanks guys i will be asking him to do it (even if he is as much use as a chocolate firework when it comes to things like this.
i might ring the insurance people and see if they will do a 48 hour insurance or something.

Plan in advance and heed Shell's advice. I recently had to put my neighbour on my car insurance for 24 hours and it cost over £50. That's roughly a quarter of the entire policy, but I'd left it too late to do anything else.

yeh we were only told about the funeral today, and its on tuesday, cue frantic calls to work about getting the day off, sis staying to baby sit and stuff like that (Thank you to my sis, i love you)

E Car used to do short term cover, ie one day, 7 days etc, i used them for my bike (E-Bike) so you may be able to get cover if you still need it there

Temp cover .com might be able to help they used to do really short periods like six hours . google temporary cover a number of companies show up
