Critter Cam Videos

Last year I installed an infrared trail cam at my bro's place on a game reserve in South Africa, below the decking of my boma.

A couple of weeks ago I returned and downloaded the footage. Over the course of a year it recorded over 200 videos of 17 different species of wild animals.

The 4 videos in the links are of a Water Monitor (Africa's largest lizard - this one about 1.5 meters), a Slender Mongoose and a Large Spotted Genet.

I loved the Water Lizard. I'd not heard of it previously so looked it up. I was somewhat amazed by its diet which includes fish, frogs, rodent, birds, crabs and snakes. It is obviously a very versatile reptile.

I was also impressed by natures incessant ability to breed features into an animal. In this case, the fin on its tail helping it to steer through the water as it swims. Despite all its ability on land, nature still evolved to keep this aspect of the water lizard to make it such an adept creature.
