  • Whitney Houston Dies Aged 48

    8:06am UK, Sunday February 12, 2012

Simon Cowell has led the entertainment industry's tributes to singer Whitney Houston just hours after she was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel room.

The 48-year-old singer was in the city for the Grammy awards which are due to take place on Sunday night.
Music mogul Cowell, who was rumoured to be considering Houston as a judge on American X Factor, has spoken as other stars poured out their grief on Twitter.
"It's really, really horrible," he said in an interview with Heart FM."She was a delight to work with."
Speaking of her infamous appearance on the British X Factor in 2009, he said: "She probably wasn't altogether there but it was still Whitney Houston and you knew you were in the presence of a legend. I'll never forget that day."

Many of the celebrities due to attend the Grammys have taken to Twitter to express their condolences to Houston's family and show their love for her.
Katy Perry wrote: "So devastating. We will always love you Whitney, R.I.P." and Rihanna said: "No words! Just tears #DearWhitney."
Rapper P Diddy echoed the same sentiments saying: "Whitney Houston!!! OMG!! I really can't believe this.. This is one of the saddest days ever.."
Mariah Carey sang the track When You Believe with Houston in 1998 for the film The Prince of Egypt.

    Mariah Carey's tweets about Houston

She tweeted: "Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston. My heartfelt condolences to Whitney's family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth."
And Justin Bieber wrote: "Just heard the news. so crazy. One of the GREATEST VOICES EVER just passed. RIP Whitney Houston. My prayers go out to her friends and family."
Soul legend Aretha Franklin told reporters: "I just can't talk about it now. It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen. My heart goes out to Cissy, her daughter Bobbi Kris, her family and Bobby."

Mitch Winehouse, whose daughter Amy died last year after a long battle with drink and drugs, said: "We are in LA and just got the news about Whitney. We are absolutely devastated. Rest in peace Whitney."
And Michael Jackson's sister La Toya wrote: "I can't fathom the fact that #whitneyhouston </> has died! My heart goes out 2 her mother, daughter & her love ones. #Whitney </> U will be missed!"
"Six-time GRAMMY winner Whitney Houston was one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades," said Neil Portnow, president and CEO, The Recording Academy.
"Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice."
Singer Lionel Richie told CNN: "She was just a gift in voice ... She was just so innocent in the business, and that voice was so pure and her life was so pure. That's what I'm holding on to. I think what we're going to do in the long run of her life story is focus on the voice, not the tragedy, but the voice."

The lives of people like Whitney - and I guess we all have our own lists of such souls who have perished before our eyes - seem to flare up, and then die all to soon.

Perhaps us lesser beings should be happier with our humble lives than we are. We don't have to wrestle with whatever demons await those who have such talent and genius as the likes of Whitney.

I dare say that she may have envied us all our quiet anonymity as much us we might envy her her fame. It's a cruel world, isn't it ?

      And then we die.

        Loved Whitney Houston.

I heard the news about half five this morning on the radio, kept it on and they were playing her amazing songs.
Brought some tears to my eyes.

She will be sadly missed, and a true legend.

        Rest In Peace Whitney!

"I will always love you" xxxxxx

Very sad that yet another with such a talent was plagued by the 'opportunities,' expectations and pressures that come with the accompanying lifestyle.

There is much to be said for maintaining anonimity.

My thoughts go to her family and loved ones during this difficult time. RIP.

Horrible news, the lifestyles that famous people lead seem to be taking their toll in recent years. It must be mindbending to live your life in the public eye and not have any privacy, no wonder they seek comfort where they can.

RIP Whitney and my thoughts are with her family x

So, so sad, yet another life cut short because of drugs.

Oh dear another "star" succumbs to their excesses. Mass grief abounds yet again. I feel unbelievably sorry for her daughter, not only has she lost her mother, but she had to live with a mother that chose drugs over her daughter.

Much praise for Shell's thoughts about Whitney's daughter. It's true, isn't it ? We all grieve over what is 'our' loss - the loss of someone who gave us so much pleasure - but we forget about those who have lost so much more than us - much needed parental or marital love.

I haven't seen confirmation that her death was due to drugs, but it sure seems the most likely reason. The pressure up there must be so intense that only the strongest can withstand it. Some do - but very few, it seems. I can't condemn her if her strength was not enough to support her aspirations - if I do that, then I condemn myself.

"Hate the sin, but love the sinner," they say.

To me, the sin was probably the drugs - but the REAL sinners, to my feeble mind - are those who continually pushed that $h1t down her throat and up her nose. I can't love them, of course - look what they have achieved.

Well it appears from this mornings news that she died in the bath.

Whether it was the drugs and this was the cause of her drowning or not well we will have to wait for the results of the tests that they are waiting for to ascertain cause of death.

RIP Whitney, she left a legacy of music that will live on for ever. xx

I do hope that nobody will now describe her as 'being bubbly'.

Or being a bit of a damp squib.

Do you think there was something fishy about the circumstance in which she died?

Since you mention it, yes, I do.

Unless the bath was significantly larger than usual, the only way for someone head to be underwater would be
                            1. if their legs were bent, or
                            2. if they'd been hauled up by their ankles!

I would guess that she had a light headed moment as she exited the bath, fell, knocked herself out and drowned.

Could happen whether drugs were involved or not....but I would imagine prescription meds didn't help.
"Although scalar fields are Lorentz scalars, they may transform nontrivially under other symmetries, such as flavour or isospin. For example, the pion is invariant under the restricted Lorentz group, but is an isospin triplet (meaning it transforms like a three component vector under the SU(2) isospin symmetry). Furthermore, it picks up a negative phase under parity inversion, so it transforms nontrivially under the full Lorentz group; such particles are called pseudoscalar rather than scalar. Most mesons are pseudoscalar particles." (finally explained to a captivated Celestine by Professor Brian Cox on Wednesday 27th June 2012 )
