Saffy. what measures should they take? The last government messed up with regards to EU immigration by not closing our employment borders for 7 years to new EU members which is allowable on accession meaning that the estimated 30,000 Polish migrants came to more than half a million. Furthermore, crackdowns have been done on so called "English language" schools and "business colleges" to ensure visas are for the purposes that they are meant for.

What other things can the government do to alleviate immigration?

I don't think we're talking just EU member states here. There is little we can do about existing ones, but certainly I know quite a few British people working abroad in other EU member states, so to some extent that works both ways.

Other countries may be a different matter though. I don't think it is a case of being racist. I doubt any of us would want to deny legitimate immigrants the right to enter the UK if they are facing perils in their own country. However, we are beginning to bulge at the seams, and when you look at demographic projections for the longer term (I know medium term are due to fall) then we need to act. It is a problem affecting not only the UK, but the entire world.

Having fought the Immigration rules in the 1980!s/90!s in respect of spouses/children including contact with the United Nations @( Right of Family Unity)@ which the u.k. dragged their feet as one of the last members to sign, a lot of immegration matters came to light and even then it was suggested a restriction on certain areas of the globe, but persecution/assylum cases priority, change of Govenments seem to changed attitudes as to what was assylum.

Blimey didn't think it would start a debate.
Personally I have no problem with anyone coming here to work as long its for that and not just to claim benefits etc.

Not surprising people are having to start petitions about this subject, even the top guns (yet again) break the rules.

The head of the UK Border Agency's border force has been suspended, the Home Office has said.
Brodie Clark was suspended amid claims certain passport checks for non-EU nationals were quietly dropped this summer.
Mr Clark is one of three senior officials thought to have been suspended while an investigation into the allegations is conducted.
The confirmation came after the Daily Mail reported that border checks had been relaxed earlier this year without the knowledge of ministers.
According to the paper, border guards were told not to bother checking biometric chips on the passports of citizens from outside the EU to ensure they are not fraudsters.
The guards were also instructed not to bother checking fingerprints and other personal details against a Home Office database of terror suspects and illegal immigrants, it said.
The Home Office refused to comment on the report.
Earlier, a report by MPs revealed border officials had lost track of 124,000 asylum seekers and migrants - equivalent to the population of a town the size of Cambridge.

They have no idea how many people should be in the country let alone how many shouldn't.
Yet another cock up, how many more can they get away with?
