    Re: Riots

In the wake of the weekend unrest, police are accused of failing to heed predictions of a riot by MPs, local groups and the Kaiser Chiefs.

      Re: Riots

I was in North London this morning and I saw a bloke in a wheelchair. I said to him, "What happened to you?"

He replied, "I was in Nam."

      I said, "What, Vietnam?"

      He said, "No. Tottenham."

Should we seek reparations from the Germans?

So the unrest has not been entirely harmful?

I enjoy doing them all and it keeps me out of mischief! There's plenty more needs doing that these people could be doing - purposeful things rather than brainless acts of thuggery.
You and I share the same difficulty, of not truly understanding the criminal underclass that has been responsible for the unrest. It seems self-evident, though, that many of those involved have not attacked their own community - they've attacked neighbouring and more affluent communities.

People talk about Human Rights - well I'm sorry, but I think they sacrificed those the minute they chose to get involved in these riots.
You ought not merely to be 'sorry', you should be utterly ashamed of such a thought. Human rights are not mere privileges that may be rescinded whenever the whim takes someone in authority.

However, measures could be taken which, whilst not infringing the human rights of the hooligans, could reduce or prevent the unrest. Loudspeakers wired up to high-powered amplifiers fed with the "Mosquito" noise might seem absurd to readers of the Daily Torygraph or the Daily Wail, but they could be quite effective in reducing the number of young people involved in the unrest.

              Re: Riots

There was an interview with a rioter on the radio earlier, when asked why target businesses the numpty argued its because people with businesses were rich, what a crock of sh it.

Another was asked why they are doing it and it said 'because we are getting our taxes back', wouldn't surprise me if the person doesn't and never has worked nor paid tax.

                  Re: Riots

IMO rights come with responsibilities. I have argued for many years now that too many people now are aware of all their rights, but few, if any of their responsibilities.

This is a case in point. The moment they show their lack of responsibility is the moment they should lose their rights.

                        Re: Riots

IMHO This has all got nothing to do with Dis-engagement of the youth, or Poverty or Mr Duggan or Tory Cuts (as disgracefully mooted by a number of senior socialists and the BBC news)

This is pure criminality and gratacious violence! No excuses whatsoever!!

Those poor, poor people who got caught up in it. As the night drew on I found that I couldn't listen to or watch any more of it. Couldn't sleep the images were imprinted in my head.

Never mind sending the Army in. Send in the SAS. Sorted!!

My heart goes out to the local community. All looters should be charged and prosecuted!!

How, then, was the theft from that lad's bag connected to the rioting?

The riots started in Hackney mid afternoon (I was watching it on tv from 3.30pm) and had spread to Peckham well before sunset.

Because not all the rioting was at night.

"In Hackney, trouble flared at around 4.45pm, in broad daylightand captured live by a BBC News helicopter. Gangs of youths fought pitched battles along the length of the main street in Hackney, Mare Street. Buses were trapped, shops were looted and vans were disgorged of their contents."
