Just want to say I hope everyone in the affected areas are safe and that order is returned as soon as possible.

      Why?

Do you believe that street disturbances should be restricted to excitable, foreign countries such as France or Greece?

We are weak on every front imho, too busy trying to find ways not to upset or offend instead of having firm and workable laws that will make people think twice about being able to do and get away with these appalling actions.
Trying to say this is happening because the young ones doing it have nothing to get up for in a morning won't wash with me, why if they are so bored can they not get off their backsides and help their community instead of trashing it?
The cut backs we are suffering are now going to affect us even more as all the damage has to be paid for and put right, the damage that can be put right that is, the mental damage I am sure that has been done to some will never be put right.

              You're missing the point.

Civil disturbance in Greece and France grew from legitimate protest towards their governments and didn't include looting and indiscriminate arson.

If you're British you should necessarily be embarrassed and ashamed by what happened last night.

                Re: Riots

From the Telegraph, there is an interactive map showing where the riots, looters did their acts of violence.

This is a senseless act and now many people have lost their businesses, homes and jobs. They have caused massive destruction not just to property but to human beings as well.

Watching Sky news last night and seeing that the police were completely powerless in some areas especially Hackney to contain the amount of violence. looting, cars and buildings set on fire - a mindless act from those who allow their children out at night to cause such destruction. Yes many of these rioters causing these acts of violence were children.

If and when the main perpertrators are caught what will their sentences be, a slap on the wrist, maybe some community service one or two might get jail sentences. Our jails would not be big enough to put them all away.

So far the cost of the damage is soaring probably now in excess of £10m after last night and the trouble is moving out of London, Birmingham and Bath have been targets as well.

Well what we need now is the troops moving in with tanks on our streets and rounding up every single person causing damage. The police are not capable it appears to bring back peace to our streets. :beagle::beagle::beagle:

London riots: breakdown of Monday night's violence

Ugly scenes of violence, rioting and looting have spread across the length and breadth of the capital since erupting three days ago.

                By James Orr
                7:06AM BST 09 Aug 2011

The trouble initially flared on Saturday night following a peaceful protest in Tottenham over the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by police.

But by Tuesday morning a large number of London boroughs had been left devastated by the trouble, with violence also erupting in cities away from the capital. Here is a breakdown of the locations of last night's violence. You can see the locations on our interactive map here.

                Hackney, east London
Between 250 and 300 people gathered on the Pembury Estate, torching cars and hurling petrol bombs at riot police. Scores of local businesses in Mare Street were broken into and looted by the troublemakers during the afternoon - many of whom were wearing hoods and masks. Three officers were injured, but not seriously, as missiles were hurled at police lines.

                Peckham, south-east London
Around 500 youths gathered in Peckham High Street, vandalising shops, lighting fires and targeting officers with missiles. Teams of riot police were seen charging at fleeing rioters after a major fire was started at a shop adjoining a Greggs bakery. Matthew Yeoland, 43, a teacher, said: "It's like a war zone and the police weren't doing anything. There were too many people and not enough police."

That is always assuming you regard the people doing this as 'British' ?

IMO (They may live here or even have been born here, but they do not believe in true British values).
They were out to get me!! But now it's too late!!

Totally agree Enaid. It could be argued I have nothing to get up for as I'm not allowed to work, but I get involved in these sites hopefully doing a bit of good, I set up my community charity hopefully doing a bit of good, I do a lot of other things in the community. I enjoy doing them all and it keeps me out of mischief! There's plenty more needs doing that these people could be doing - purposeful things rather than brainless acts of thuggery.

People talk about Human Rights - well I'm sorry, but I think they sacrificed those the minute they chose to get involved in these riots.

This is in no way having a go at anybody who has posted light hearted comments to try to lift the mood of this thread a little, but could I respectfully suggest (and I use the word respectfully intentionally ) that we keep this thread to serious posts. If anybody were to come to this site who had been affected by these riots and in need of help and advice, I think it would be downright insulting for them to read jokes or light hearted captions.

I know those who have posted these are contributing extremely seriously as well, but out of pure respect for anyone who may come here, or just pure respect for those who have been affected, I think we should keep things on a serious thread. The time for the jokes will come later.
