  • Help- car battery

My OH just used car battery fill up water and over filled the cells and its coming out of the vent....

When he was charging the battery it was making fizzy noises so we turned it off and have put it on the concrete floor in the garage...

    Will it just evaporate off?

Slightly panicy...please tell me it wont explode!

    Re: Help- car battery

Is the battery a sealed type or can you remove each of the 6 vents caps from the top? It is doubtful it will explode unless there is an internal fault with the battery.

Ideally you should remove the excess fluid but be aware that this is not just water it is sulphuric acid. If you have one, a turkey baster or similar can be used to extract the excess fluid. When charging the battery you should leave the vent caps off (or loosely placed in the holes and make sure it is switched off at the mains when connecting/disconnecting the terminal clamps as this will create a spark.

Have just put baking powder over all the leaked water on the table to try an neutralise it.

Its not sealed...should we remove the vents?

Remove the vents like in the picture or if they are singular remove each one.

No need to use baking powder, just use plenty of cold water from the tap on a cloth to wipe up the spills.

I would recommend you place the battery on a concrete floor or similar and not the table as when it is charging it will spit a little.

Do you use anything similar to a turkey baster for your gardening?

The level of fluid should just cover the top of the lead plates as you view them from the top, about a centimetre above is fine. There may also be a level indicator inside in the form of a piece of plastic sticking out or across the vent hole, again, usually about a centimetre above the lead cells.

ound a baster didnt even know I had one..and got the excess out.

Silly question... do I charge it with the vents off now, I thought they were meant to be closed when its charging?

Thank you Tools, OH goes away later tonight for 3 days and I was worried it would explode or catch fire or explode or something in the middle of the night

Charge it with the vents off, or loosely placed over the holes to prevent spitting.

                  Hi, all,

A car battery that needs topping up??

While you're about it, don't forget to check the distributor points & arm are clean & dry, and watch out for the starting handle. (Kicks like a mule!!)

                    Re: Help- car battery

pmsl charity, to be honest, I would prefer such things to be still fitted to cars, minus the starting handle. Maintenance free is a dirty word to a mechanic lol

You can't beat being able to adjust the timing by ear and getting the best out of the engine, todays ECU driven engine management systems leave little scope for "tinkering", any monkey can plug in a code reader, take in a swift breath and tell you "they aren't cheap you know"
