  • MOH saved my life tonight

Tonight I was eating my tea and somehow i swallowed a piece of meat I had not chewed properly - and no this is not a funny or rude story!

I started choking and I could feel it was some way down my wind pipe

I could not speak or breathe and was getting redder and redder I managed to stand and was trying to vomit or cough - but it was the most frightenng thing I have ever been through. MOH has not done first aid but kept slapping me and doing the manouvre round my waist . Nothing seemed to work and it was like in slow motion I had visions of this was how I was going to end my days and thought I would pass out . Everyone was panicking and MOH was going to take me to hospital and I wanted him to ring 999 but I could not speak or breathe.

After about 6 or 7 attempts of hitting slaaping and the other manouvre finally it came out.

Now I feel battered bruised but very grateful and a bit teary.

I must do an up to date first aid course as it made us all realise how important it is.MOH nearly broke my ribs but at least he had roughly the right idea.
Not the way I wanted to end my days.!!

Blimey scoobs, glad to hear you are ok. Well done to hubby, I think he should be cashing in his well earned brownie points.

If you ever find yourself in the same situation without someone to help, the best way is to sharply force yourself against a surface such as the kitchen worktop or the arm/back of a chair just below the diaphragm. I feel short of breath just bloody thinking about it.

I have recently done a 1st Aid course through work and would highly recommend it to anyone.

St. Johns run family 1st aid courses and cost between £25-£50 per person for a 6 hour course covering basic 1st aid Family first aid

      Hi

I did not know that tip above - and I know its worth updating knowledge as advice does change. unfortunately I am the only one in the family who has done first aid- long time ago and I could not speak to tell them what to do.

I woke up this morning and my eye is blood red except for the pupil - so I guess all the force of everything must have burst a blood vessel in my eye. My son was watching everything and said my face was tottaly red so must have been frightening for him as well.

MOH is a big guy and was obviously very forceful as i feel like i have been in the boxing ring today lol. Still better than not being here at all:tinysmile_grin_t:

Blimey Scooby a very frightening experience no doubt, I am glad, apart from the bruising and bloodshot eye you are ok.
My OH has something wrong in his throat area, some muscle goes the wrong way sometimes and he starts to choke, he has actually passed out once with it. He can go ages and it never happens, but when it does it is very scary, as I can't help him.
My mum too had trouble swallowing as he had thyroid trouble and it affected her throat, I think it was a goiter.
Not trying to scare you just saying, next time you go to docs may be worth a mention, especially if it happens again.

Gosh Scoobs, how scary is that.

Glad you are feeling a little better and I am sure your eye will heal in time together with the bruises.

Memo to self, must chew meat before swallowing.

Strewth Scoobydoo, but at least bruising and bloodshots is a result. I got bitten badly on my cheekbone, several times, by something determinedly nasty in the garden. Thank my lucky stars I didn't fall asleep on the sofa. Just got the contact lens out in time. My face is lop-sided and a grin looks like a leer. Going out only after dark till antihistamines kick in.

                hi zeitgit

I went out today but with my dark glasses on - did not want to frighten anyone

Apparently it will take about two weeks for the blood to go away in my eye and I may get it checked out if i get any more symptoms

Sorry to hear about your bite . I got bitten once with a bad reaction and it was a huge ant in Ireland . The worse things here normally are horseflies they can have a very nasty bite.

Gosh howscary for you. Do you have to do CPR if he passes out?

I was just on the verge of passing out and to be honest I dont know if MOH could have done that or not - also wont go into details but my nose and airway was blocked with various fluds etc so dont know whether it would have worked at all.

I suppose you have to just call an ambulance ?

The one and only time he passed out, was only for a few seconds although I remember thinking he was dying.
I don't do anything scoobs, he just holds his hands to the side and then I know its happening, then he sort of relaxes and stays still for a few minutes and the muscle must release, very weird and very scary. But whatever the muscle is called and I can't remember (that surprised you didn't it ? me forgetting lol) it just shuts instead of opening so nothing can pass it.
I don't think I could do that emergency stuff tbh I would have to shout for help.

You should always try and get help first anyway even if you try and help. Must be very scary for you knowing it might happen again .

Today i feel really guilty as I know I should just be grateful to be here - but for some reason I feel a bit teary and subdued. Also not really with it.

my eye is still blood red and scared everyone at work. Fed up of explaining it really.

Never mind sure I will be back to normal tomorrow.

You can perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre on yourself and as Tools states above, if using your fist does not work, then use furniture.

                            1. Make a fist with one hand and place it against your abdomen, just above the navel, with the thumb facing in toward your body.
                            2. Place your other hand over your closed fist.
                            3. Push your fist into your abdomen, using a quick, hard, thrusting motion. The direction of movement should be up and in.
                            4. Repeat the thrusts several times, trying to dislodge the obstruction. If this doesn't work, you will want to use a flat-edged object instead of your fist.
                            5. Find a hard, flat-edged surface such as a chair back or the edge of a table. A kitchen worktop or railing may also work.
                            6. Place your abdomen against the surface edge, again just above the navel. Bend your upper body over the hard edge to get better leverage.
                            7. Thrust your abdomen against the surface, hard and fast. If you are using a chair back, you can pull yourself down against the chair to increase the force of your thrusts.
                            8. Provided you can breathe call 999. If the object is still lodged in your throat, leave the phone off the hook and continue performing the Heimlich on yourself until help arrives.

If you are performing this on someone else, you must not carry out CPR if the airway is blocked, this could force the blockage further down the airway and make it even harder to keep them alive. If the Heimlich Manoeuvre does not work after multiple successive attempts then a tracheotomy may need to performed, but this is not for the faint hearted, although is relatively simple to do.

Everyone should learn first aid and should make sure their skills and knowledge are regularly updated.

It is quite normal to feel as you do Scooby and it will pass very soon. You should also feel proud of your other half - but get those first aid courses completed as soon as possible. Just knowing what to do will make you better straight away.

Yes you are right and when my boss saw me today looking like one of the hounds of the baskervilles he said straight away we must all do refreshers at work.

Feel a bit better today think maybe i was a bit worried I had brain damage through lack of oxygen or something - but probably just me not concentrating :tinysmile_grin_t:

Just that i think your first thought afterwards are about your finances /wills life assurance etc - what would the family have done had it gone the other way.

But trying not to dwell on that now and coming out the other side .

                              Thanks for all the messages
