Next time you are in a hurry and thinking about overtaking - think of this young man who was a friend of my daughters and a thoroughly decent young peron.

He had to swerve to avoid a 4X4 which overtook 3 cars and then had to cut up a line of traffic as there was a car coming the other way. The 4x4 then left the scene.

The girl is in a critical but stable condition and they were childhood sweethearts.


So very very sad .

yes and so hard to help my daughter and her boyfriend deal with it . I think they are in shock. All I keep thinking about is the parents.
My daughter has been in his car several times and said he was a sensible driver - but I guess when faced with that situation maybe his inexperience played a part and he panicked. just hope the person who may have caused it does come forward.

Yes - its not going to bring the young lad back - but as the other driver in the 4x4 did apparently /allegedly hit the car I think it unlikely he did not know what he had done.

Problem is if some drivers see a line of slow moving traffic, they always think they can beat it, especially if there's a lorry or a horsebox in front of them. We were almost involved in an accident a few weeks ago on the motorway, a driver thinking just cos we were in a horsebox he could speed past us into a rapidly diminishing gap. He couldn't. And swerved into the car which was already in the outside lane. No one was injured but the cars were wrecked. He said it was our fault and that we'd pulled out on him, when the fact was that we had pulled out with plenty of time and room, he was speeding, and instead of braking or pulling over he just put his foot down and went for it.

I hope the X5 driver comes forward. Maybe he is on camera in the vicinity somewhere.

Where it happened is quite rural country roads so no cameras unfortunately - but from the appeal the police have a few leads so we will have to see what happens.

Nearly identical scenario as I have heard the driver realised he had made a bad manouvre and tried to pull back into the traffic and then as there was no room then put his foot down full throttle.

I always tell my daughter if she is not 110% sure the overtake is a safe manouvre and she is being pressurised from drivers behind - then drop back and let them overtake her or even pull in where safe and let someone else take the risk if they want to - but not her.

Here is a question.

My daughter is going to be away on the day of her friends funeral and we were trying to think of a way she could do something at the time to remember him and her other friends who will be there and very upset.

We thought of lighting a sky lantern with a message - but can not do that as they are near an airport . then we thought of putting a message/poem in a bottle and putting it in the sea - but that is out as well as they are near a beach for turtles and we dont really want to put anything in the sea that could endanger them.

Any other ideas ?
