  • Special needs adult

My best friend has a son of 19 who has special needs - no behavior problems but probably mental ability of an 8 year old.

Now he is 19 he has to finish college and then they seem to be getting very little help about what to do next.

They are exploring all normal avenues through local council and education etc but I wondered if there were any forums around that may help her to speak to people in her position and find out about training courses etc.

His condition is undiagnosed which makes getting help more difficult.

First off he needs to be assessed by Adult Services through which ever local council he is with.
If he has a social worker they should also be involved.
Transgression with people with learning difficulties from childhood to adult services is very difficult as many services seem to stop, they are there but you need to ask in many cases.
There are day centres now with different activities for different levels of ability.

He had an assessment due - but they keep canceling appointments - lets hope they keep to the next one and propose some help.

In the meantime if you go onto your council website, they will have a section for Disability Services. Here is an example with the Greenwich one Greenwich Council - Disabilities - Services for the disabled.
His social worker should be advising as to what benefits he should be on, ask about all of these and his entitlement and possibly his mums as a carer.
