  • Anyone know a cheapo way of removing rust

    Hi

Does anyone know of a cheap way of removing rust? As there's rather a lot of rust to remove from a lot of things, I don't really want to buy the branded rust remover things as it would cost me a fortune. I have heard that vinegar will work - can anyone confirm this? I want to paint the items afterwards so don't want the rust to come back.

    All tips gratefully received!

Depending on what it is you may not need to remove it. Have you looked at Hammerite Direct to Rust Metal Paint? It is specially formulated to be applied directly onto rust without the need of primer or undercoat. You should remove any large flakes and make sure the surface to be painted is clean and as smooth as possible, but no need to remove all the rust first.

Yes I have had a look but I have this nagging worry that the rust might reappear eventually, and as Ii might be selling them after rust removal and painting, I don't really want to take that chance.

I will probably be using Hammerite or something similar to paint with after i get rid of the rust.

good old fasiond wire wool/wire brush/wet and dry paper(emery cloth)
is best and then if you are painting it go to your local diy store and get some rust killer on it before you paint

                  Hi

Gobby - no its not a rusty old bloke, the one oI've got is younger than me so shiny and newish lol.

Granby - if I did it with wire wool etc a) it would take forever and b) would cost a fortune in wire wool and wire brushes, not to mention I'd be knackered.

I want a cheap and quick solution, as this is part of my new (possible) money making scheme/sideline. If the overheads are too high there'll be no profit in it........

Perhaps you could tell us what it is you are trying to do and, better informed, we can advise further?

Blimey what will my insides be like, rust free fair enough, but what else?
By the way coke also removes lime scale from your toilet.
I may stop drinking the stuff now, well maybe lol

MY OH works for the company who do ICI's logistics ... he says rub it down as best you can, remove as much rust as poss, wipe down to get all loose material off surface, apply Hammerite Direct to Rust primer, leave to dry then paint with Hammerite Metal Paint.

Works everytime and if you've removed all the loose crap when you were cleaning down, the rust won't reappear (so the label says) lol .... we tried it and it's rust free so far.

Horseshoes - lots of them. Various sizes. They can be used as stable door nameplates( There's a surprise), on playhouses, bedroom doors, for weddings etc. Painted up with names etc. I have about 100 horseshoes that need prepping before I can get painting etc, thats why I don't really fancy the old wire brush game. And I've already burnt out the motor on hubby's Dremmel (don't tell him)

I've learned the hard way, there really is no subsitute for removing rust, takes eldow grease and patience, bit of wire wool (you'd be supprised how little you need) I usually spay lightly with a little WD40.... you don't even have to scrub at it hard.
then repaint, works a treat..... Hubby and I have used this method countless times on the many motorbikes we've had over the years. My first bike for example was a mess when I got her, by the time I'd finished you'd have thought she'd just come out of the showroom
