  • Snow creates chaos across the UK

Britain faces paralysis today as ¼" of snow (about 1cm) fell overnight and actually settled in some places.

"I came out to find some snow on my car this morning," said Major Ian Clement, "it was truly shocking."

Near Arctic temperatures of -1C gripped the country and caused chaos on the roads.

"I was driving to the post office to get my pension this morning, and almost drove through some snow - it could have been a deathtrap, I don't know why the council don't do something about it. We had the same thing in 1991." said Major Ian Clement (yes the same one, not many people out to vox-pop interview this morning, sorry).

Public transport also came to a standstill as Health and Safety officials deemed the conditions to be too risky to public transport workers and the public and all buses and trains across the country lay at a standstill in their depots.

"Our prime goal is the health and safety of workers and the public," said Mr Upmicrak, Regional Director of the UK Health and Safety Executive. "Of course a lot of people will be forced to drive to work or even walk, possibly increasing the accident rate, especially with people slipping on the snowy pavements…I hadn't really thought all that through at the time.... but…well... there's not much I can do about that now, and I retire in July, so I'll be gone long before any cases come to court anyway."

Scientists were quick to put the unusual weather conditions down to 'global warming'. "Its consistent with the models," said Professor Gravitrayne of the West Ham Climate Institute of Climate Change. "To put it simply, we run the figures through this computer program, which attempts to correlate the data with the probability that we will get funding for climate research next year and reports any positive correlations. Amazingly year on year we are seeing an increase in probability of funding coupled with all kinds of weather - snow, ice, rain, floods, you name it. If that's not conclusive proof of 'global warming' then I don't know what is. I really don't."

Great just about sums it up!

My daughter asked why all the schools were closed round here ( snow not too bad at all) and i said because maybe all the teachers could not get in etc etc. But apparently it is for health and safety reasons only! How are they ever going to learn about danger if we wrap them in cotton wool! I thight it was a wind up but apprarently not.

The kids were probably in more danger at home alone while thier parents went to work than falling over in the playground.

Exactly, Scoobs and I bet this poor girls parents wished she would have been in school yesterday. I am surprised there has not been a lot more accidents happen, or maybe there has been, but not being as serious as this have not been reported. they show the kids on the news obviously having a great time in the snow, but I think they are in far more danger on one of them there sledges than walking to school.

Sledge crash: Girl dies in hospital
A 16-year-old girl has died in hospital after being badly injured in a sledging accident at a country park.
Police said Francesca, from Sheffield, died at the city's Northern General Hospital at 6pm.
They named another of the girls as Nikki Burns, also 16 and from Sheffield, who was being treated at the city's Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
The other victims - described by emergency services as "walking wounded" - were taken to Rotherham District General Hospital.
It is believed the girls were sledging shortly in a field which had been fenced off to use for cattle grazing.
They were thought to have been using an improvised sledge made out of a piece of metal.
The girls are understood to have gone through a fence containing barbed wire before hitting another fence, which stopped them from falling into a river.
Francesca was airlifted to hospital after the crash. She was said to have suffered serious head injuries.
Three emergency ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, an air ambulance and a clinical team leader all attended the incident. The park is owned by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and is one of the biggest country parks in the area.

        Exactly Nelly.

Rather than children going to school where they are supervised in a relatively safe environment, the health & safety brigade close down schools giving kids the green light run riot wherever they want.

Yesterday I saw some kids hurtling down a steep slope at ridiculous speeds and obviously out of control. An accident waiting to happen.

The schools were closed to cover the butts of those who were responsible for them and not in the overall interests of the safety of children.

No need to shut the schools or stop the transport really is there, all it took was the roads to be cleared properly, but then that takes the powers that be at the local councils taking notice of the weather reports and organising the gritters and whatever else is needed.
Then if all parents made sure their kids had sensible footwear, ie wellies with non slip soles, then their little darlings would be able to walk to school and their feet stay dry at the same time. How many kids have you seen running about in trainers in this weather?
Wellies are great for when its raining as well, but everyone's so worried about be fashionable rather than safe and sensible in bad weather.
How about if everyone cleared the path outside their homes as well, it won't take much effort and people can get about.

Then again I'm living in a dreamworld and thinking of Utopia arn't I.

Really really sad story that - felt really odd when I read it after my post.

Last year I heard of someone near us who had a spinal injury as they were sledging in a boat. Same thing really went too fast and could not stop themselves. He was 18.

Today in our area in oxfordshire ( hardly any snow!) there was one school closed - where my friend works. Reason? the coaches may skid in the car park! If someone had just put some grit or salt on it the problem would have been solved - some of the teachers were furious.

Well my school is Open, as we had the brains to buy a grit bin and a hopper spreader for the site manager, so every morning when he opens the gates all the paths and car park get a good coating.
And 'touch wood' we have no heating problems either.

After looking out the window this morning I'm beginning to wonder if the article in the first post is not too wide of the mark.

Yes we have had proper snow today so I am working from home. I was advised not to take the road to the office as a friend struggled in his 4 wheel drive. Now TODAY here I can understand the schools being closed as we would have trouble getting out of our drive!

Its all starting to melt here, mind you not before time too, we actually found one of our cats sitting on the ice in the middle of our pond yesterday and the day before. This morning he got on there and the ice was starting to melt, stupid bloody cat can see the Koi through the ice and is having a proper game trying to get to them.

I have taken photo's, but they are on my new camera and will upload onto here once I work out how to work the blinking thing.

Actually have not got much choice as we have an ISO9000 inspection and a customer audit coming up and it is a case of lots of boring spread sheets /targets and figures to get ready and sometimes its easier from home without distractions.

I though you did dig yourself anyway.!

Dont forget to put bread and nuts out for the birds! I did this morning then watched in disgust as my cat ate all the bread and then sat in the bush waiting for the birds to come get the nuts.
