For 2 reasons No 1 The betting companies allowed to live stream football, they got hammered with the betting machines giving them limits. They come back with this and they are hoping footy fans will become gambling addicts because they want to watch footy. No 2 after the massive battle over over draft costs which the consumer eventually won, potential again to cripple folks with their massive interest rates.

On the other hand you can bet a quid and watch the game whereas you'd have to pay a lot more to live stream it. Plus you have the chance of winning money. It's a bargain.
Also if you go 500 quid overdrawn for a week you will only pay less than 4 quid in total, a lot less than a payday loan.
    Every cloud etc ....

Gambling addiction is a growing issue which has well documented serious financial and mental health consequences for individuals and their families. If the price society pays to limit the problem is that some people don't get to watch an FA cup game cheaper than they otherwise would, it's a price worth paying IMO.

It might be cheaper but should we be using pay day loans as the standard by which we judge the cost of borrowing money from banks? I don't think so.

You are entitled to your opinion, mine is that if you have an addiction it's your problem and not the responsibility of the state, ditto drug addiction.
Do you want Greggs sanctioned because some people are obese ?
Interest rates on savings is a bigger issue than interest charges IMO. It's disgraceful banks can charge 40% on overdrafts and offer only 1% on savings.

As I said, addiction isn't just a problem for the individual - it has negative consequences for their families & children. It encourages crime, debt and burdens the NHS, which affects everyone and this is why society and the governments it elects rightly decided to regulate the gambling industry.

I agree that savings rates are dire but it sounds like we agree that they are both big issues.

We could go on all day debating this but my stance is one of personal responsibility, self control, consequences and the effect of controls on the rest of us.
I'm not fat so why should I pay the sugar tax for example. I'm not an alcoholic so why should I pay the tax on strong beers ?
I agree with your point on effects on society, crime committed to feed an addiction especially. But it's wrong to put legislation in place to deter what is seen as enjoyment by the majority just to protect the minority addicts.
You could also argue anyone who smokes should pay their own cancer treatment.

If you go on the sites themselves and see the promotions they are offering, often they look too good to miss. Although you state self control is the answer when offered £100 of free bets when you open an account for instance not many would bypass the offer. There are T&Cs of course as part of the offer and often people fail to read them. Having worked in a bookmakers I have witnessed first hand how addictive the gaming machines were and thankfully measures have been put in place to try and address this, Having an online account and being able to stream sports through the gambling sites often will lead to betting on sports etc and then you are hooked.
As* you mentioned smoking I remember my first try at a cig when I was about 12 years old it was horrible I felt dizzy and sick, but guess what I was soon became addicted and remained so for some 40 odd years till I saw the light.

As for the interest rate on overdrafts, the banks state many will be better off and my opinion on that is only the banks will be better of as always.

As for the banks interest rates on overdrafts, we will have to wait for the public to air its views and woes
