  • Job offer retracted without good cause

I would like to get some expert opinion from this forum on the legality of withdrawing a job offer.
My wife who is on maternity leave recently received a provisional job offer which she accepted and has a record of this. She was then given a formal unconditional job offer to accept within a week. She was asked to meet with her prospective boss for an introductory meet and then a day before the deadline the job offer was withdrawn and this was also communicated by the agent. No good explaination given for the withdrawal except that they now say that it was conditional to meeting the other person / boss and that they were not satisfied that they could meet her expectations. My wife went ahead and accepted the offer before the available deadline and reiterated that she is happy with the offer which meets her expectations but it remains withdrawn.
My question is that is this legal to retract an offer once a provisional offer is accepted and before a deadline to consider and which does not have any conditions?
Is this unfairly withdrawn? What needs to be done next?
Who do we deal with as my wife went via an agent and we don't know the companies grievance procedures as yet?

Just the insinuation that they discriminated against her for being pregnant as she is on maternity leave should have made them very wary of withdrawing the offer I would have thought? Did they know this beforehand, or during?
