  • Ed Miliband pledges new laws to clamp down on zero-hours contracts – Politics – News

New laws to tackle the end of zero-hours contracts abuse would be implemented under a Labour government, Ed Miliband promised. The Labour leader made the manifesto pledge in Glasgow today following a shadow cabinet meeting, and said tackling the issue would be harder in an independent Scotland. Having read a flyer pushed through my letterbox by UKIP, their attitude towards human rights leaves a lot to be desired and displays an alarming lack of knowledge and understanding of how ECHR works and bleats about "European judges dictating to the UK".

Well, once we can get Nigel Farrage to stop behaving like an hysterical schoolgirl every time the word "Europe" is uttered, the European Convention on Human Rights 1953 (aka Rome Convention 1953) is administered by the Council of Europe, a body made up of representative from the 47 countries that are signatories to the Convention, which includes Russia.

Of the 47 signatories to ECHR, the UK is the most frequent offender, having, on average, 10 cases per year going before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Why? Because we have arrogant MPs who delude themselves that because they have been elected, they have a mandate to do what the City of London tells them to do and to hell with what the electorate's wishes are or what the electorate thinks. UKIP's vow to pull out of ECHR is destined to backfire on them and the mainstream parties big-time as there is provision within ECHR which means the rights cannot be taken away from citizens, nor can the rights be destroyed or restricted. ECHR is International Law which supersedes UK domestic law, whether Cameron, Clegg, Farrage or Milliband like it or not.

Getting back on topic, apart from looking like a character that has walked off the set of a Wallace and Grommit movie, Milliband needs to grasp the bull by the horns and outlaw Zero-Hours Contracts altogether. I have doubts as to the legality of such contracts and my suspicion is if such contracts were put to the test in a court of law, they would be ruled unenforceable, regardless of any bleating by employers that employees agree to them by signing them. If a person is given a "sign it or get out" choice, that is not free will - it is blackmail, which is illegal.

There are European Parliamentary elections due on 22 May 2014, Wales. Also, like the way you managed to include the names of five MPs into your post, including reference to Balls.
