Aldi and Lidl to force 'big four' supermarkets into price war to stop stampede of customers to discount chains

    • A price war is coming, according to experts in supermarket economics
    • UK supermarket chains have been losing money to the German mega-stores
    • Sales down at Christmas for UK stores, hitting profits
    • Many major British stores 'ducking the challenge' set by Aldi and Lidl
    • Aldi and Lidl are beating major supermarkets on name-brand item price
    • Asda reduces many items to 50p in a bid to contend with losses

Apparently you can use credit cards in Scotland and certain Aldi stores in Wales but not here in England, some may think this is wrong, I myself think it a blessing as it helps keep prices down and also stops people buying on impulse.

Price isn't everything and that's often forgotten by most UK supermarkets, excluding Waitrose.

Especially Aldi is very welcome and one of my favourites.

Tesco isn't doing well and I can see why. Personally, I stopped shopping there last August and haven't been back ever since!

You only need to cross the Channel and visit any French supermarket (and not necessarily Carrefour) to realise how poorly stocked UK supermarkets generally are. While vegetarians are well catered for in the UK, I have never seen a seafood or tuna pizza in any UK supermarket. Also, quality of many products are inferior in the UK compared to many continental European countries.

        Really? How odd! :confused2:

I had no idea! :noidea: There's no Aldi anywhere near me. Does that also apply to debit cards?

...and it's also forgotten by a lot of consumers! :wof:

I agree, but then France has always been renowned for its haute cuisine while Britain is largely a nation of fast food lovers
        ...and chip lovers!

That would depend on where and what you buy. For example, I found that Spanish supermarkets often sold out of date and even mouldy food! :yuck: I even found a piece of cheese that was nearly a month out of date and had moulded (not a blue variety by the way) in El Corte Ingles, which would be the equivalent of something like Selfridge's food hall! :scared:

Which the French will vehemently deny having any connection with!
