Indeed. This caused a big stir locally when it hit the press three years ago:

The Sikh soldiers refused/could not wear helmets in the war on their turbans due to their faith. Sikh's were allowed to carry their ceremonial daggers, of course.

Pray tell me/us, why people who follow a christian/roman catholic faith/religion are being discriminated against?

Perhaps, the lib/con alliance should dwell on the following quote. As it also applies to the native born British/Christians: English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish RoI included.
"In Great Britain we claim to support religious tolerance. Why therefore should we try to force someone to do something which is definitely against his religious convictions?

It seems to be to do with something being, 'a requirement of the faith' as opposed to being worn as just, 'a symbol of faith.'

It still seems bizarre to me though! As I said above, it goes beyond a crucifix, it goes to the wearing of a wedding ring for anyone married in an Anglican or Catholic Church, the putting up of Christmas Decorations in schools, taken to its extreme, the validity of having a holiday for Easter and Christmas.
