  • That HMCR session

After Private Eye and The Guardian exposed the Permanent Secretary for Tax at HM Revenue and Customs - Dave Harnett - for doing a sweetheart deal with Vodafone in which he wrote off billions in tax it emerged that he also let off Goldman Sachs £10m in interest after the bank contested paying National Insurance contributions on bonuses for 5 years.

During numerous committee hearings MPs have been trying to get to the bottom why Dave Hartnett and HMRC's top lawyer Anthony Inglese let Goldman off the hook but have been thwarted all the way by Hartnett and Inglese claiming 'taxpayer confidentiality' and 'legal privilege'.

At yesterday's Public Accounts Committee hearing it exploded after Inglese repeatedly refused to answer questions - even about why he won't answer questions - and the committee took the highly unusual decision to make him swear on oath.

It's worth watching and the fun kicks off right from the start. Player

Just watched the first 20 minutes of the hearing and it seems that Mr Inglese does not want to answer any question. I sincerely hope that his days are numbered as how can this man not answer simple questions and how can we have someone like this as a lawyer to HMRC it beggars belief.
