  • Tesco accuse UK Banks of Data sharing

    http://www.dailyfinance.co.uk/2010/1...-data-sharing/

Tesco has accused UK major banks of sharing customer data. It's a claim they've refuted but the accusation - from Benny Higgins, boss of Tesco Bank - carries another sting: that the banks also operate a cartel on consumer credit data. However there's been plenty of denial from banking players so far.
    Denial

"The established banks routinely share current account data which can be used to calculate income and expenditure, as well as wider product holdings, through a closed user group," Benny Higgins told the Treasury Select Committee. "This puts smaller players at a disadvantage."

Tesco accuse the banks of sharing information through a company called Callcredit Information Group - originally founded by HSBC, Lloyds, RBS and Barclays, though Callcredit vigorously have denied the accusation.

    Barriers to entry?

Tesco Bank may be a smaller player but it's growing quickly with more than 6m accounts currently; mortgages are likely to be offered in the near future. So it's in their interests for there to be a level playing field, particularly on any issues related to consumer creditworthiness.

Tesco's also gunning hard at the insurance market; it also launched a new bond in October for savers and it's clearly making the most of the financial crisis and the public's distrust of banks and rip-off charges.

Yet if Tesco start slapping heavy charges and fees on their customers, they will shop elsewhere. Meanwhile, it's attempting to kick down as many barriers to entry as it can.

Yes I was telling Enaid about this earlier.

The committee put this allegation to Stephen Hester from RBS who denied it.

You can watch Benny Higgins make the allegation here - fast forward to 12.24.30 Player

I don't think the article reflects what he actually said, which wasn't complaining about being shut out but the existence of a cartel.

Tescos may well be too dominant in the grocery business and shut out it's competitors but for anyone to seriously challenge the monopoly of the big 5 banks it will take someone of Tescos muscle to do it.

The choice is either to have another high street bank that tows the line of the others or someone who acts against the status quo that would genuinely stimulate competition - and given the choice I know which I'd prefer to see.

I too watched the meeting and was very impressed with the Tesco chappy, I know what you mean about Tesco and the situation with small shops etc. They are though providing what the majority of todays customers want, everything at hand under the same roof for speed and convenience and affordability.
I felt that Tesco are ready to go into the PCA market, but not until they get the nitty gritty sorted and can run an honest and transparent service. This is only my opinion of course.

Disband it. If they wanted to join it they wouldn't have disclosed the existence of it. Clearly.

Tesco want to expand there banking arm.
                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesco_Bank

                  They distanced themselves from RBS over a period of time and;
must want to be looked upon favourably by the so called regulators...

Wonder, if Tesco will buy Egg Banking? (minus of the toxic debt, of course)

I assume you mean distancing themselves mean that they bought RBS Bank out of their 50% stake? Furthermore, I think they still use RBS as their clearing bank so they have hardly distanced themselves as such.
They have been hiring people with links to both RBS Group and formerly HBOS with their headquarters on their banking arm in Scotland. I suspect the distance between RBS Head Office and Tesco is probably not that far either in the literal translation of distancing themselves, lol!
