    There's a lot that doesn't make sense in that story.

    If £1,000 was transferred from the customer's account to a stranger's credit card account, why on earth did the customer agree a £1,000 overdraft to cover the missing funds? She should have demanded the £1,000 transaction reversed.

    Then she received an email from the bank thanking her for changing her password. Only she hadn't and Halifax claimed not to know of the message.
    So this e-mail was probably a phishing e-mail, and not from Halifax at all. She probably followed a link in this phishing e-mail and gave her account password details away.

    And then her account was emptied - surprise, surprise.
