  • Is computer security software worth paying for?

Is it really worth spending £60 or so on security software for my PC? I stopped subscribing to a package last year and since then have had no problems I'm aware of. There appears to be loads of free protection software on the net. Are they safe, and will they do the job?

I guess you get what you pay for.

As a thought how much would you pay to prevent someone accessing any personal info you have on your PC?

It may be that the free AV/SPAM/ Privacy software is as good as the stuff you pay for. All i know is we pay a few grand a year to protect our network from viruses/spam/hackers etc.

Is it money down the drain? two months ago we could neither send nor receive email for a day. this was because we had someone from the former eastern block using our server to send spam.

Doesn't sound bad but with 40 consultants in the same position this represents around £10 - £15K per day potential revenue lost to us.

so if we spend this much on our security software a year then its money well spent.

      Hi Glenn

You are saying it is money well spent, but you also say that it didnt do its job properly and it cost you a day without email losing you £10 - £15K

I use the free AVG as well as a Free firewall, which I haven't had any problems with.
For the home user I think this adequete, but obviously large companies will need more sophisticated software, although your post proves that even these dont stop it happening.

Just make sure you check fully and research any security software that you intend to use
as there are as many rogue softwares, with convincing names, out there as there are legitmate ones.

Just cos you get a pop up on your screen saying you are infected, doesnt mean you are.
If you do get a pop up, the surest way to get infected is to usually click that pop up for your 'free' system scan.

Had me in tears of frustration for a few hours that one Nik!!!
I do wonder about all the security stuff, Mc Afee didn't stop the antivirus thing and there's a few things that seem to by pass it, but then maybe without it my computer would be more screwed up than it is!

JUST TO BE CLEAR DO NOT USE THIS

This is referring to the dodgy programs I mentioned

Not only is it an absolute scam, but it is a nuisance to get rid of once it is on your computer. I was passed a computer that had antivirus 2008 on it. It kept rebooting in a neverending cycle, prevented internet access, and much more. If people want antivirus software then ask here. Especially bombard PK for advice, you know it makes sense!
