I am an executor for a will which leaves two properties to four grandchildren. One property is the testator's main residence and the other is a buy-to-let property. I understand how the IHT nil-rate band etc works for the main residence left to family members but what is the situation with the rent-to-buy property which will be sold once the tenant has departed?

Thankyou for your reply. Yes, the buy-to-rent property is just part of the total estate. The main residence attracts an additional IHT allowance because it is passed down to direct descendants but presumably the situation is different with the buy-to-let. Is the value of the buy-to-let just added directly to the total estate as though it were so much invested money? Perhaps it is more complicated than that?
