  • Is a council bill for carers a priority debt to be paid before other creditors?

Hello Everyone - I hope you are all keeping warm, bbbrr.

I'm helping my friend to deal with her late mum's estate, which amounts to about £3K versus creditors who are owed about £30K, and local council are chasing for payment of an invoice in respect of carers, which were provided before she died. The bill is for £800. As the council is effectively government should this debt be paid before other creditors like loan companies and Cabot financial?
    Thank you for your replies.
    Best wishes,

Remember that funeral costs and legitimate executor expenses should be paid first. These will be more than 3K I think

Thank you, Matty B. Funeral costs have already been paid, which come to £977.00, and about £3k left, so will be enough to pay council I think, if they are the highest priority which I guess they will be as others are loan companies, e.g. Cabot Financial and Barclaycard.

I don't think the council in this role are a preferential position

That's interesting, Ostell, thank you. I'll suggest she puts them on a par with other creditors and see what they say. Thanks
