  • Inheriting a property but savings not included.

Can anyone suggest an answer to this:

An lady has no family but creates a will leaving her property to a friend. She has a large savings account and this is not mentioned in the will. What happens to that money? Would it go to the state?

    Many thanks.

    Hi CharlieP,
The property would pass to the friend. Any other assets would be dealt with as a partial intestacy so following the intestacy rules which can found here:- https://www.gov.uk/inherits-someone-dies-without-will
    Hope that helps.

Thank Peridot She was under impression there was no need to mention the savings. I'll make her aware.

        Hi again,
Does she not say where any residue of the estate is going? If she does then the savings would fall into that pot so to speak. If there is nothing other than the property and no residuary beneficiaries then the partial intestacy happens. Hope that clarifies.
