  • Tesco Mobile Pay Monthly Contract

Hi, hope someone can help please!
My husband took out a £20 iPhone contract with Tesco Mobile back in May and his bills have been in excess of £35 each month.
So I decided to check out his bills. I download all the CSV files for his itemised bills and was shocked to see alot of calls for 30 seconds exactly.
So I queried this with Tesco and they said to me any call under 30 seconds will be taken off your allowance as 30 seconds and this is what all mobile companies do apparently.
You are probably thinking well whats this issue, but my husband is a man of few words and his calls consist of 'hi and bye!' so 85% of my husbands calls are well under the 30 second mark.
In looking further into it when Tesco round the calls up to 30 seconds it is taking him way over on his allowance.
I hope I make sense and attached an example.
Basically he has made in the last 8 days alone 33 calls well under 30 seconds this = 7 minutes 37 seconds but Tesco will deduct 16 minutes 30 seconds from his allowance.
I think this is underhand and have since checked my mobile contract with Orange and they don't do this they report in seconds.
Has anyone else come across this?
I have been on the phone to Tesco for well over an hour and trying to explain what I mean becomes so difficult when you can tell they are not bothered! :tinysmile_hmm_t2:

Charlene, a very warm welcome to Legal Beagles. I see you have tried to ask politely about the issue with the call centre operative who appears to be wanting to ignore what you are saying. My personal opinion is that if they do not want to help then try to take it up to their executive complaints team: roger.fogg@uk.tesco.com

Roger Fogg is the CEO of tesco communications which deals with mobile phones. Write down a chronology of what happened and if your husband was asked about his useage of the phone(potential misselling) since clearly he is a man of little words

Post up when you have a reply and make sure you include all the details that you have given in the word document.

I think Puffrose may be the one for you here, but I'd be inclined to express your unhappiness via e-mail to the CEO of Tesco Mobile:

          Hiya Charlene,

I'm ex 02 staff and I am shocked they have taken double time in allowances. it is highly unusual and I am reading the terms and condtions of the contract as we speak.

am i correct in assuming hes on 50mins/50 texts allowances a month?

Hi, hes on 250 mins and 500 texts but hes going over these 250 mins just had to add another bundle to take him up to 500 mins. That example is just 8 days this has been going on since May no wonder hes going over if this is what they do! Speaking to the advisor was like banging my head against a brick wall! Its probably not noticeable to the majority of customers but as my husband hates being on the phone it sticks out like a sore thumb! I don't even know where his contract his cant find it! Thanks

Do you think this is something that needs referring or bringing to the attention of OFCOM, Puff?

                  no prob labman..

I have discovered the reason for the bill. it seems the powers that be have decided that the minimum call length is 30 second, any calls made under that will be charged at 30 seconds, then per second. Very strange way of billing something, but as far as I know perfectly legal.

The question now is, how did you purchase your phone and how long have you had it? If you bought it in the store, you are already tied in contract and if you bought it online and had it more than 14 days, your tied in. I know.. not the best news in the world. Any refunds on calls due to not knowing that you had this restriction are purely discretionary.

Well well how sneaky and to say to me tonight most mobile companies do this when they don't is a complete lie! He purchased it in store around May time but this was never mentioned to him! So we'll have to put up with it then because I very much doubt they'll give us anything back. I would just like to say how helpful you have been!

Re: Tesco Mobile Pay Monthly Contract

As its in the call costings leaflet that the *supposedly* give you with every phone, theres not a great deal Ofcom can do BB, however, and I mean this with the greatest of respect Charlene, if your husband is going over his allowance I suggest a tariff upgrade.
this does not lengthen your contract, just changes your price plan.

If he goes to the £25 plan he gets 500 mins automatically, and saves you £10 a month. and you wont need the bolt-on unless that is lower than £5 per month. It may be an idea to suggest he texts instead of talks too. that way he wont go over his allowances by getting to the point quicky.. Im sorry im being a bit useless, but I have never seen anything like this in all the time i was with O2.

A way to get good customer services is to say For the benefit of the tape, unless I need this call listened to... and then make your point. this makes advisors sit up and think OMG she knows what shes talking about.

You have been very helpful! I was going to get back onto them again tommorow so its saved me another call!
That's what I did on the call added the bolt on of 250 mins to take him to 500 mins an extra £5 per month. I have told him to text more now!

please forgive multiple postings, the regulars understand the way I work, but i you have a tesco mobile account, call them up and ask them to link the account to your husband, then claim Family Perks on your contract.

this can give you an additonal 500 tesco-tesco mins free!
