  • Warning! Internet scam!

I've just been alerted to an internet scam that's doing the rounds by a neighbour who nearly got caught by it.

A male person is cold-calling internet users, claiming they have viruses on their computer and offering to remove them for free. He then demands £127.00. However, it appears he is using some form of malware to phish bank details and trash the OS of the victim's computer. He tried to withdraw £127.0 from my neighbour's bank account, found he couldn't and had the nerve to ring her and ask when she was putting any money in. I won't tell you what she told him to do as it's not fit to be posted, but please feel free to be as rude as possible to this parasite should he contact you.

Had them ring me a year or so a ago (tried again recently too) saying my computer reported a problem to them. Told me to go in to control panel and system logs saying all the yellow and red warnings indicated a virus and wanted me to let them have remote access so they could install the antivirus software to remove the virus. I told them the system warnings are nothing to do with a virus and occur on all computers and are normal, and that he can go **** himself.

Calling them the most unpleasant names you can think of and telling what they actually are seems to stop them ringing you again.

I'd love it to happen to me, I use old Commodore Amigas a lot of the time, be happy to let him waffle on and then tell him that, I doubt he would even know what an Amiga is!

Just had one of these on. Came up as an international call. He said they had registered a virus on their server and traced it back to my machine. Asian accent, he wanted me to enter www. teamserve.com in my address bar(didn't do it of course), i presume he was trying to open a VPN although i am not really a techie. Anyway i kept telling him to hang on, about half an hour before he caught on(things you do when you are bored) i hope it was an international call.

To quote the great George Takei,

when you get a telemarketer on the phone, give the phone to a 3 year old and tell them its santa!!

I guess we are all someone's child just trying to make a living. How desperate are these folk on the other side of the world that they are brain washed to thinking it is ok to con decent people out of their hard earned money .....

You are far more forgiving than i Ruby, to me these people are obviously educated they have access to technology and the skills to be able to use it, i think we are talking about greed here rather than need.
