  • Switching from BT to SKY

We are paying BT £50.00 a month + cost of any non inclusive calls. for phone and unlimited broadband.

Decided to switch to Sky as can get the nearly the same(limited to 40GB Download a month) for £33.25 a month. Went through the process of switching on line last week and have been given a date of 22nd March for switch over for telephone. However, broadband will take another 2 weeks to switch.

Today I received a letter from BT confirming the switch but saying that as the broadband was part of a package, this would be moved to a standard BT broadband service and that this would come with a new 12 month contract. Will this apply as we're on a rolling contract and I've already started the switching process?

Do you know exactly what package you were on so we can look it up - it may say on your bills.

In any case, once it is switched I would stop any payments to BT (cancel any Direct Debit) and fight them over it.

See if you can find the package and we'll see what we can do.

Hadn't seen that but I've already cancelled the renewable contract after receiving a letter from BT last week. Now they're saying that the broadband will have to be switched to a new 12 month contract
The actual paragraph in the letter states

" If you had one of our packages - a group of BT services at a set price - and are stopping your phone services within the package's contract term, but keeping your broadband with BT, we'll move you to a standard BT broadband service(plus BT Vision if this was part of your package). These will be the same broadband and BT Vision services you had as part of your package and they'll come with new 12-month contracts. If you decide to end these contracts within the 12-month minimum term, you'll incur a single charge based on the number of months left of that minimum term.

How long have you held your current BT contract? If more than 12 months, unless I'm misunderstanding something from the bit quoted above from their letter you should just be able to cancel as you're not keeping the broadband.

I think they've misread your letter and think you're keeping your broadband with BT.

Sorry not explaining myself very well.

Last week, Letter received (dated February 2011) advising 12 month contract due to end on the 16th March and that they would automatically set up another 12 month renewable contract term.

So I Rang them to cancel renewable 12 month contract, then rang another No. to obtain MAC code.

On the 7th ordered Sky on line

Letter from Sky dated 7th confirming order for Line Rental, Phone Package and Broadband

Letter from BT dated 8th March stating a new Broadband Contract required

I'm just worried that because of the 2 week difference in switching dates , we're going to be tied into a new 12 month contract with BT.

Re: Switching from BT to SKY

This is bull**** you informed them not to renew before the 16th so you are free to move they are trying it on.

As Casper says fight it as you are under no obligation to tie yourself to another 12 mth term.

I would also be reporting them to OFCOM if they do not comply with your legit request.

Wednesday you will be clear of any contract and it is your choice whether you renew or not not theres.

BTW they cannot not set up another contract anyway until Thursday 17th March as one is still in force until the 16th.

Put it in writing today and send tomorrow that as your contract ends on the 16th you will not be renewing the contract for all and any BT services you do not have to say why although you can if you wish.

By sending them a termination notice via letter you are covered and they have no room to move except to accept.

you must do this straight away as time is short.

                Good Luck

This is where I'm confused. As I'll be on a monthly contract from the 16th and the line rental/calls switch to sky on the 22nd, I will have to pay BT for 1 months line rental, calls and broadband, so should'nt any new contract for the broadband apply from either the 22nd March or the 16th April?

Re: Switching from BT to SKY

I am with BT and not on any contract at all because like yours it ran out and I refuse to commit to any other purely because that gives me the option to move should I wish.

You contract is about to expire so you are at no obligation to do anything. you have honoured the contract to its date of expiry.

As I'll be on a monthly contract from the 16th

Only if you wish to be, there is no reason why they cannot supply the mac code once your yearly contract has expired and you transfer your broadband service at the same time as your phone service.

The contract expires on Wednesday from then on going forward the ball is in your court.

They are trying it on and I would inform that a complaint to OFCOM will follow if they do not sort it.

Re: Switching from BT to SKY

                      Update.

I didn't write to cancelling the contract from the 16th as I wanted the service to continue on a monthly basis until Sky processed the switch over.

I also advised BT at the beginning of this month that the 12 monthly renewably contract was not to be renewed and also requested my MAC code to enable the broadband switch.

On the 8th March BT wrote to me explaining that they had received notification from Sky about the transfer ref line rental/calls and that there would be no termination charges

                      Latest bill from BT.

They've included line rental and broadband charges to cover 14TH March to June even though I'm now supposed to be on a monthly contract.

Phone call last night wanting me to either set up a new DD or make a payment of just over £90.00.

Writing to them to complain about the incorrect bilL and to advise them that any outstanding amount will be paid once the transfer has been completed. I'll also be sending a copy to OFCOM

If you have an old Direct Debit, make sure it is cancelled at the right time to pay what you should, but no more than that. If they still think you owe them money wait and see what OFCOM say - I'd be surprised if they agree with BT.
