Hi everybody. I've just found Legal Beagles whilst searching the web to find an answer to my problem and I hope somebody can help.
Yesterday I received a letter from Anglian Water stating that I have an unpaid bill from a property I vacated nearly four and a half years ago. The letter is in my old married name. I have since moved to a different county (different water supplier) and have remarried.
The letter quotes a claim number, a court account number, and an outstanding balance of £1173.59.
It also states that "the county court claim issued for the vacated water and sewerage charges, for the above property, remains outstanding.".
Firstly, I have no recollection of a county court claim being issued against me. Is there a way to find details of a court claim using the court account number the letter has provided me with?
Secondly, it seems a rather large amount for water charges alone. Whilst I was living in the property we did have money problems and some bills were unpaid. But for the bill to total almost £1200 would mean that it was unpaid for around four years, which is not the case.
Thirdly, after I received the letter yesterday I checked my credit report and there is no record at all of any CCJs in my name. In fact, my credit report is spotless. Am I right in thinking that if the CCJ is less than six years old there would definitely be a record of it on my report?
Fourthly, why have they taken so long to write to me? I am easily traceable. There are records of my name change and address change on my credit report and I've been on the electoral roll at my new address since I moved here.
The final paragraph of the letter says "Failure to contact us within two weeks will result in enforcement actions against the judgement will be issued against you.", which doesn't actually make any sense to me. I haven't done anything yet as I'm not sure of the best way to proceed. I don't want anything to affect my credit rating as I have spent a long time building it back up.
